'74 CV Boot Clips?

I'm in the process of re-doing my CV joints and axles. I ordered 4 CV boot kits from the Thing Shop, and am ready to put things back together. My question is whether I need to put clamps on the inner (small) end of the new boots. The kits did not come with them, and the Type 181 shop manual says that the axle is designed to do away with these clamps, since it has 2 ridges that the boot sits in between. It seems to me that it would be safer to put clamps on, but would this do any sort of harm to the boots? I can't think of any, but then again this is my first Thing, and I'm sure VW put a lot of thought into the decision. Thanks!

No need for clamps, there is nowhere for it to go.

The later axles have a ridge that keeps the boot in place. But i still put the clamps on.
