I will soon be removing my gas tank to replace the steering gear, donut, etc. Should I replace the tank nipple, the screen, and the filler hoses and tank to car gasket while the tank is out? It's a 73...do I buy OE "t" fitting for the heater or can I just get one at the local parts place. I plan to replace all the fuel line with OE type 5 mm (Last year I put in new 1/4" line). I have no problems with gas or gas tank...but since I need to pull it to do the steering gear, I am wondering what else might be addressed. If I order the new nipple (tank outlet) and screen...does the screen go in from the bottom? What about the gasket at the sending unit? My gauge is fine and I hoped just to leave it while I take the tank out. I started a thread about my project earlier, but I can't find it...if I repeat myself, it's because I am old and have CRS!!! thanks _________________ It's a Southern Thing, 73, stock.

Now would be a great time to clean out the tank and POR-15 it... _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

This reminds me of an old saying.
If it isn't broke, keep messing with it until it is. |

Bill:
Here is my advise. Run tank as near to empty as possible. Prior to doing any work purchase a new tanks screen pipe gasket and nut kit... If you do not know where to get it pmail me and I will get you the good stuff...
Leave the fuel gauge alone.
Remove the fuel gauge cover being careful to not to lose the nut or washer. Remove the gauge wire..
Plan to replace the anti squeak gasket under the tank and a least one of the inner gaskets on the fuel filler line. These are still available from the VW dealer... Buy 10' of good quality adhesive backed rubber seal.. Clean the area apply the seal..
Once the tank is out, remove all fluid. Using a strong flashlight and look inside the tank... You will be able to see the condition.
The stock fuel "t" to the gas heater must me metal not plastic.
Shopping list prior to removal
screen, pipe gasket and nut kit
5 mm braided German fuel line
6 stainless steel clamps
plastic fuel filter
fuel filler gaskets
anti squeal tank seal
All my VWs have their fuel tanks edged with the same rubber that goes around the Thing body ( you have to cut out a section so the tnak is grounded so the fuel gauge still works.... It works great!!
Feel free to pmail me if you have any questions. |
