Here's a Russian jeep for sale on Ebay that looks akin to our Thing:
Maybe some collaberation between Germany and Russia? Or somebody stole the other's idea? Or maybe another source for Thing parts?! |

To me, it doesn't look very Thing/Kubelwagen-like at all. More like an oversized Jeep with an open top, and some beetle-esque front fenders. |

Looks like a cross between a WWII jeep and a WWII Dodge power wagon. |

To my eyes, the new Jeep 4 door Wrangler looks like a "new" Thing.
But then again, my wife says I see things differently everywhere. |

The comparison between the 4-door wrangler and The Thing is not without merit. Actually, the new Wrangler is probably the first factory-built 4-door convertible available in the US since The Thing. |

Let's not forget the Hummer H1 available with a soft-top.
How 'bout we say "the new Wrangler is probably the first factory-built 4-door convertible available in the US since The Thing under $100K".

Touché. Forgot about that one. I always thought the Hummer showed some Thing-inspired design features anyway (4 doors, high rockers, squared off fenders, etc.), especially considering that when the Hummer was being designed in the early 80s, when the 181 was a contemporary NATO staff car. If you look at the standard military softtop Hummer, it looks even more Thing-like than the civilian softtop H-1, with side curtains and all. |

Yes, but does the Hummer still have the mounts for a .50 cal machine gun? |

You guys think those are like Things?? C'mon..
There's really not much out there that can compare to the Thing. That is, with the exception of the Citroën Méhari.
It has it's flat air-cooled engine up front... otherwise, it has almost exactly the same design ideas.

Definitely. Looks like they saw how VW used the Type 1 platform and came up with the 82 & 181, and used the 2cv as the platform for that monstrosity! Mini took a similar path with the Mini Moke.
Renault also made a Mehari ripoff called the Rodeo
Though, with the plastic Mehari, the Moke and the Rodeo, I think we've deviated dangerously close to golf cart territory.

The material used for the coach was ABS.
Unfortunately, Mehari's open plastic body, which attracted the sun-and-fun crowd to purchase the car, was also its Achilles' heel. The plastic body did not fare well under the sun's constant exposure. Most of the remaining Meharis suffer from cracked plastic body panels and bad fading of the body color (the color was injected into the Mehari's plastic panels)
The long term problem wasn't the body however (which obviously wouldn't rust), but the rather sparse tubular metal sub frame which attached the body to the chassis. These were notorious for rusting away.
Diagrams of the vehicle: http://www.citrobe.org/mhintern.htm
It was equipped with the 602 cc flat air cooled twin engine from the 2CV6.
The standard Méhari weighed just 1,300 pounds.

interesting to see the mehari, moke, UAZ all mentioned in the same thread, because they all have a similar theme- they were all originally conceived for military use.
Can you imagine seeing four battle-hardened SAS troopers charging in to battle...in a Moke? _________________ OG JHC
