Back to the white 63 15. Any idea why it came with basalt grey instead of como interior and trim? Just curious if something from the option codes set this off or did the factory make that choice when building it? |
My guess would be because that matches.
Como Green would not match the way other VW color schemes do.
Basalt seems to be the default as well, I think all the other single color Deluxes of that time frame are also Basalt Grey? |
First, KWZ, not trying to take away from you bus, it rocks, just bored ramblings.
I don't dispute it looks good. My thought is the factory had pre-determined the interior combo for standard color schemes. There are many vintage american cars that are white with blue interior. What if the person spec'ing this bus wanted that combo? I was curious if anything in the order made the specific combo happen?
When I first saw the 63 15 I thought, boy that would look cool with a como green interior. I think it is just since I have seen many american cars that way.

I agree, but the green might clash a little with the Pearl White. I think a solid Blauweiss bus with a Como interior would be insane. I think of my bus as a Mouse Gray-delete Mouse Gray/Pearl White bus. _________________ '57 sunroof Standard

Totally agree on the beauty of a blue/green or even aqua on white like your american car photo 55samba. I wish that was offered being I prefer stock.

Just looked thru this and your other photos of other buses. Love it! If you're ever up for a visitor I'd treat to lunch! Looks like a fun collection. _________________ BreckSkier

Thank you! I take the responsibility of preserving it very seriously. I want people 100 years from now to know that 15 windows weren't meant to be lowered with clear coated rust. _________________ '57 sunroof Standard

Took the bus out this past Saturday to a local show. Put a total of 16 miles on it this year. Back in the shop for winter hibernation.....

Props to you for being able to only drive it 16 miles. It would kill me to own a vehicle and not drive it. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

This would be me if someone asked me to drive that bus on the street! I'd need to be heavily sedated to do so for fear of someone hitting it. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I feel like that’s a nerd bus on several levels. I wonder if even haggerty would insure a low mileage 15 for what the hard-core people feel it’s truly worth.
It would be weird/not fun for me personally to own a car I can only drive 15 miles a year. But I’m not at “make it rain” level of living. I feel like it’s kind of a trap. On the one hand, it’s for sure a rare bird... on the other you would feel guilty actually enjoying it on Saturdays |

Hagerty insures the bus under a stated value policy for what I feel the bus is probably worth. Very happy with them.
As for the afraid to drive it thing, yes, it is a full spinchter clenching experience, but I have two other splits I drive more frequently. The ‘63 is a great bus to sit and drink at. I truly feel like I am a custodian of it. _________________ '57 sunroof Standard

Any chance to get images of the upper left of the transaxle? Especially the control cables from body back. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
