I got my CV's off with plenty of soaking with Gibbs oil. Since I have room to work I thought I'd change the transmission oil. What is a good synthetic for the Thing gear box? |

I've recently researched this very issue. The main thing that I learned is to stay away from GL-5 gear oil because some of the additives are corrosive to the ACVW tranny.
I really trust the folks at aircooled.net, so I just ordered this:

You can find it cheaper elsewhere online, but I was placing an order with them anyway.
Other people swear by this stuff:

And then others say to get any name brand synthetic in proper weight (75W90).
Here's one of the better discussions that I read:

Oh, and one technical tip: Remove the plug where you add oil *before* you drain the oil. You don't want to empty your tranny only to find out that the plug where you add the oil has frozen up.
Good luck and HTH.

It seems that all of the oil in the local shops says exceeds GL-5 standards. I picked up a bottle of Mobil 1 75w90 synthetic. Is that safe to use? |
