OUCH!!!
I replaced my nose this spring (haven't got it painted, yet). I plan on using POR-15 on the sheet metal, where the seal goes. You can prep the POR-15 and paint right over it.
Just a thought for something you could do for your next nose.
Good luck, man! |

Here's my Gerson piece. This will speed up the repair.
Here what I found after I took a knotted wire wheel to the metal. I was expecting more holes but this is all that showed up. The top of the frame was solid - no rust through.
Welding from the nose replacement.

Started repairing the small rust holes...
Then I moved on to the big piece. Pretty rusty inside too. I brushed on some Tremclad to slow down the rust.
Welding in the Gerson piece.
I found the Gerson piece to be a bit too long where the metal bends over the A pillar. I had to cut pieces off (last two pics) in order to get the piece to fit on. I'll weld them back on after I trim a little off them. The piece fit good around the windshield opening but I had to force it to meet on the bottom. I think it was easier when I replaced the complete nose. _________________ Joey

Thanks.
I got the rest of the welding done on the A pillars.
And the doors back on.
Not sure why the top body line is off on this side. I'm not too concerned about the looks just as long as the windshield fits.
This guys body lines are off too:
If I were to do it again I'd do it how this person did it:

Next I got to weld up the few small holes on the top frame and slap some POR 15 on it. _________________ Joey

How did that Tremclad hold up with the welding heat? I have been thinking about doing something similar with POR-15 (maybe Tremclad-not familiar with it though). Been thinking I could coat a lot of the "back-side" of things you never see and keep it from rusting from the inside out. But was wondering about melting it off or possible starting it on fire and basically losing the purpose of the product. So, what did you experience in that respect?
BTW, great pics and thread, definitely great info for me since I am close to doing the same repair here soon. Thanks. _________________ 1977 Transporter 2.0L Automatic Project

I'm sure the Tremclad (same as Rust-oleum) burned off where I welded. I didn't see any fires yet. I plan on shooting a rust inhibitor in there as well. Weld-through primer would be better. It burns but it melts back into the weld. _________________ Joey

More progress...
Not sure if I should use POR 15 or just paint for around the windshield frame. Anyone have a bad experience with POR 15 in this area? _________________ Joey

I'm not from your area obviously, but I'd por 15 it since its more rust resistant. Looks good. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

i need to replace my dented up front panel on my 78 its too much for a new panel, so im assuming if i can find a straight nose on another 78 or 79 i can just cut it off and weld it to my bus?Im not going to just cut up any old bus it will have to be a parts bus thats to far gone to save. I know of a 78 down at pull a part that im going to be going to pretty soon. _________________ Victim of Volkswagen Virus |

If you're just going to use the nose skin then '73 and up will work.
I did the Marine clean & Metal-Ready to the windshield frame this evening. Hopefully it'll be dry and ready for the POR 15 tomorrow. _________________ Joey

Nope. If I were you I'd try popping out that dent on your nose first. You have many other things to address before you start major body work. I bet you can pop it out into usable shape. _________________ MAKE FORUMS GREAT AGAIN

The nose I put on back in 2006 wasn't in perfect condition. In fact, it came off a bus that also was driven in the winter (road salt). _________________ Joey

Like I said earlier, if you are just replacing the nose skin, not the whole piece as I did, you won't have to worry about the door hinges. _________________ Joey
