The other day Kevin (The Aussie Trimmer) told me he's retiring from doing interiors and KG parts. Very sad news!!! |
That is sad...Kevin will be a great loss to the KG restorer... a real craftsman. |
Yes...what a real shame ! _________________ -StockRocks- |

Original style door panels can be made to order from SMS Auto Fabrics in Oregon. Their number is 503-263-3535 They specialize in auto fabrics and have a huge collection of NOS fabrics (for American and foreign autos) and I believe they have certain fabrics reproduced. Richard Troy sent them a complete set of 58-59 Ghia door panels about ten years ago to reproduce, so they have the correct templates and vinyl samples. Their panels are fantastic including the correct waffle pattern vinyl and heat sealed seams (they don't include the trim pieces). I believe they also have the correct fabric and vinyl for the seats, though I don't know if they sew seat covers on site or if you have to order the fabric and have them produced locally. I heard a rumor that Kevin ordered his panels from SMS, but I have no first hand knowledge of this. |

SMS fabric is $98 per yard to do your seats but I don't think you really need that much. they sent me a sample and the weave was very close |

Hello,
I'm searching for pictures of a 1965 convertible door from the inside as I'm trying to locate the place where there is any chrome trim. Does anyone have this? |

I do not know where you would have heard such unadulterated garbage from Loren; but if you don't have proof, WHY the hell do you suggest such an untruth on this forum. Believe me when I say, I have never had SMS auto fabric's make any of MY Karmann Ghia door panels or any other parts I have made.
The panels I make; are made by me personally, in Western Australia as are all the other parts I produce.
You say their door panels are fantastic; have you seen them? Why don’t you post a photo of a KG door panel they make?
Yes I know that SMS do make door panels for the US muscle Car market; and do know that the proprietor travels all over the US buying up all the old or liquidated stock from companies that have gone out of business.
If Richard had sent them a complete set of panels 10 years ago; its dam obvious they didn’t think they could make a dollar out of them, because they didn’t reproduce them for sale all those years ago. _________________ Cheers,

They (SMS) also like to over charge overseas buyers and ignore emails pointing that fact out to them, have had to resort to disputing the transaction with my credit card company.
Just something to keep in mind when ordering....... |

Moving on, there were a couple of nice interiors in the lowlight cabrios at the volksworld show this weekend. I know the blue one (UK car) had a West Coast Classic / Lenny Copp (have I got that right?) interior.
I'm not sure where the Belgian interior was from, it was more of a custom feel (whoa, hey, well custom)
They were both amazing cars so I thought you'd like to see them anyway |

^^I prefer sticking to original interiors in this thread - that way we can can be sure they are correct.
Both those interiors have been fully redone.
The lower interior especially, the Graphite Silver Cab, is not correct.
The Bernina isnt 100% either. Blue vinyl should be darker, & the insert cloth doesnt look exactly as original to me.
--------
This 58/59 Dolphin Blue Coupe has a lovely original interior (bar the carpets).
Really quite a bright blue, including the rear parcel shelf area.
Dashtop is later - 1960 - still ribbed but with the seperate screw on vent covers, and the underside trim. _________________ -StockRocks- |

One crucial area to get right when retrimming seat covers is the piping...ensure it is the right diameter!
I have seen a few where it is way too FAT! _________________ -StockRocks- |

Three 56 Thin Back Seat questions got s 56 Pelican Red/Black Roof Ghia:
First:
The size of the (P204 Black) Cord material? What I see around is 1/8 gaps in a poly @ 9 bucks a yard. How different then the 90 bucks a yard stuff is that? Is it texture?
Second:
Any K200 Light Grey Vinyl picture of texture or color? Name of swatch that is close and avail in the states?
Third: The H151 "Beige" Headliner and the Carpet T106 Grey "Beige"?
Neither looks Beige to me What are the closest colors. Carpet is just the Grey or Beige German Square Weave?
Forth:
Anybody know if these Thin Back seat stoppers and bolts are available? Mine are gone.
Three pieces.
1) A bolt with a "screw" top.
2) A ring bold with texture
3) Rubber piece a top of number 2

Nice couple of posts!
JD1, carpet
The beige...
See
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2...p;start=60
This car has lost its og headlining, but i would trust the beige theme for the headliner!
Dave? Russ? Udo?
I would put the thinback seats hardware question in its own thread...
----------
Florent, dolphin blue...
What a cracking interior!
That would have good value to a connoiseur!
Id like to know if the interior vinyl is grey or the light blue?
Do you have a shot of the year parcel shelf area?
See the 2 colour charts here

Question for those in the know. The lines on the door panels in the vinyl sections, that have been melted into the vinyl, I call them melt lines. What is the technical or correct name for that process?
Trying to find an interior shop that does them correctly is the hard part of the 59 interior. I have seen the SJS panels from Oregon and they don't have the melt lines. I hear Mr Copp does them
I am also trying to find the upper chrome piece for the door panel. The long skinny piece.
Any information would be helpful
Thanks To All

Wow, That's amazing
You should sell that to John Lemke. He is looking for a good bulkmat for years now to make a reproduction. _________________ Dutch Karmann-Ghia and coachbuild lover.
