Those mufflers are "cool" until you have to adjust valves behind them. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

I have those mufflers and I'm not happy with them. They're loud, offer no scavenging, and as already mentioned, they make adjusting the valves next to impossible unless you are Mr. Fantastic.
One caveat, my '73 was retrofitted by the PO with this setup to use heat exchangers (which is why I don't have a '73 fan shroud, !@#$!#@ it, but that's another story). The point is that you may have a *little* more room to adjust the valves with the J-tubes on there instead of the heat exchangers, but I don't think that it will make much difference. The mufflers are just too close to the heads. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

I had those mufflers for years, and although adjusting the valves with them in wasn't easy, it's also not impossible. I picked up a cheap angled screwdriver and got used to adjusting them from the side. |

I just put this system on my '73 Thing:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=182538
It sounds fantastic. Not loud, just throaty and tidy. It doesn't conflict with anything and used the stock "J" tubes.
I got the ceramic coated one. Very nicely done. |

Which "those" are you referring to? If you are talking about dual header design that prompted the thread, it is louder than the stock '73 IMO.
If you are talking about the Rhino system that bmwloco purchased, my understanding is that it is louder than stock, but no obnoxiously so.
I am replacing my dual header system as soon as a muffler comes in to go with my merged header. If anyone wants it, they're welcome to it (free for local pickup or cost of shipping otherwise). If you want to run J-tubes, you'll have to find those on your own. _________________ '73 Thing -- making 45 mph exciting again. |

The system I put on is a little louder than stock, but MUCH quieter than the knackered system that was on my Thing.
It's just a throaty "thrummm" sound. Not too loud, not too soft, just right
I'm running my Thing presently with no top. With a hard top or soft, I'm sure it would be very quiet.
I especially like the fact that the system exits through the bumper, is high and out of the way, and doesn't restrict access to anything. |

I dunno about that -- my Thing seems MUCH louder with the top up, probably because I don't have wind and outside noise mixing in. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife
