As long as we're on VW sale stories...
A couple months ago, the brother of a friend of mine up the street called and said his sister in law had driven her 73 super down from Kansas and was looking to sell it down here. He described it to me in what I thought to be pretty accurate detail... very nice interior, good paint, all engine parts present, only thing he said was wrong was one of the pea shooters on the exhaust was missing (obviously easily remedied)...and told me she was thinking of setting an asking price of $4200. Around these parts, from what he described, it seemed like a good starting price.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, when i was talking about my bug with a few coworkers, when one of them mentioned she had seen a bug for sale down the road and was sort of interested, and asked if I'd go take a look. So I drove over to look at it, and lo and behold it was the same 73 super my friend's brother had asked me about. Only... not quite in the shape he had described it. The interior was nice but the seat bottoms looked a bit collapsed (seat springs gone).. the paint was OK but faded, right rear fender had some damage, and most concerning, there appeared to be the beginnings of rust bubbling in the rear quarters (death foam.) I thought to myself.. "hmmm, more like $2000--$2500 at most."
A couple days ago, my friend came over and while we were chatting he mentioned that she had received an offer of $3800 for the car-- and TURNED IT DOWN. Not to be too harsh, because I do fully believe she realizes she made a mistake... but still. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

I think that car has some serious rust issues and I'm not sure I've got the cojones to drive it. If it runs. And I don't believe it has a leather interior either! _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

Retail value: $4995 ????? No heater channels- how much rust is hidden underneath that shiny paint?
A solid rear end collision and that Beetle will fold like an accordion. Unsafe to drive. |

What is the law on choking PO's? Can you choking them until they turn purple, or can you go all the way to unconsciousness?
I'll be the first to admit I'm a VW neophyte and I have a lot to learn. I'm mechanical (shade tree and Apache crew chief), but I know I need to read and watch you more experienced folks to learn how to make my car what I want it to be. The PO(S) who had my 1968 was just a moron. I'm going to spend more time fixing his screw ups and things he thought were cool (NO, just, NO.) than I am implementing my agenda.

Is it really worth it to purchase a used window regulator, as opposed to an aftermarket one by say, Wolfsburg West or MAM? Most sellers in the classifieds want $20+ above the reproductions, for originals, which will surely need servicing, so why not just save the time and money?

Seems a bit steep... or maybe not, with all the suspension mods:

Anyway I think I might rather have that 50's willy's jeep _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

A lot of people think the Karmann badge makes it special. It doesn't. _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"
