there's a bit of a "clank/rub" in my shift rod in the tunnel, just behind where the shifter actually ties into the rod. I'm getting ready to pull the engine and tranny to do some work, now would be the time to change that shift rod...
does the shift rod "float" between the shift lever and the connection to the tranny, or is it running thru a tube in the tunnel or otherwise connected?
just want to address the problem while I'm here. |

There is a shift rod bushing in there. Its a cheap plastic part and fails pretty regularly. Its a pain to install...not hard...just a pain.
I have found that some time polishing the shift rod and some wd40 goes a long way. |

There's a hanger a few inches behind the shifter. The other end rests on the coupler and tranny shiftrod. _________________ Glenn

must be that damn hanger that the noise is coming from. geeze. i'll have to think on this one for a while.
at least a new shift rod would be smooth and possibly rub better than this old beat up one.
any parting thoughts? |

Pull rod out...
Replace plastic bushing...
Push rod back in...

I can't imagine a VW or buggy parts house that didn't carry the bushing as they are a common problem. Any of the online suppliers would have then as well. _________________ Rosemarie and Paul Hill

pull out... you mean from the rear of the tunnel? if so, how does the shifter seat get thru the support? from the pic, there doesn't seem to be enough room for it to fit.
I'll be giving it a try in a few days - but any clarification on this would be helpful. |

OK - a little clarification on what your car is gonna make a difference on how much of a pain in the ass this is going to be.
Pull your shifter and you will see the shift rod. if you jiggle it, it will rattle if your bushing is toast.
A full length pan car is the easiest since the rod had not been modified and it will reach the front access hole. A standard shortened buggy is more of a challenge because the rod has been shortened 14" so it doesnt quite reach the front, making it hard to get out. On things like MG kit cars, have no clue how you do it.
First check the condition of your shift rod coupler. If it looks tired, get a replacement as well as the bushing.
Find some of the pics of the inside of the tunnel so you know what you are dealing with. Also keep in mind that the rod has a curve to it.
Good luck. This repair can take you 1/2 hour or all day..... _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

Here is graphics of inside tunnel the may help you do the job...

I made tool from length of PVC pipe that had slot cut in end and wedged around cup of shift rod and allowed me to "extend" the reach into tunnel from front of chassis.... If slot in PVC is deep enough you might even be able to clamp PVC to rod with "worm type" hose clamp...

I'm dealing with a shifter issue as well, trying to mate the bus tranny to the bug shift rod...and in my search found this picture. It's from another post from the Samba a few years ago. Hope it's okay to share it.
