That's what I was saying, it's the same as a regular early mirror, maybe I wasnt clear enough. I'll find some pics. I was pissed when mine was broken, but much relieved that I could scavenge parts off a regular mirror |

Let me guess, this is ISP West seals and trim? If so, do a search of Woreign's thread about his Notch, as he was having trouble installing his as well. I think Anthony replied to that thread, explaining how it's supposed to go together (they didn't send any instructions). And YES, Tram was having trouble installing it as well. You might need to tape the trim in the slot, before you install the window assembly. It helped doing that, when I/we did my T-34 rubber seals.
Erik, if you look at his pics, he's using the later "thin style" trim. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yes, but it isn't an ISP exclusive problem- it's every Type 3 seal out there. The seals aren't quite as wide as original as you'll see by the OE seal lines on the glass. The ISP guys seem to have a system down, though, so it really would be great if they'd lay out exactly what they do to get theirs to fit right. Be aware that to get them to SEAL once they are in, you're going to have to go all under them with flowable silicone window sealer on the outsides or they WILL leak, even if they appear to seal flush. If one doesn't leak this week, it will next week.
You need to tape the trim into the seal with painter's tape before installing the glass, then, I usually use a thin electrical wire wrapped in the seal TWICE around for a thorough installation. The twice around trick is something that I actually learned from the Disciple- it's one of those "DUH! Why didn't I think of that!" things that's really a best practice... if things don't seat quite right the first time, you have a built in re-do- and where headlining or other coverings are involved in the edges, your second pass with the wire and the glass installed allows you to tuck the material in neatly.
The "installer error" thing that parts suppliers like to throw around doesn't sit with me- I'm installing probably five times as much Mercedes glass as VW easily... and most are on W111 Coupes/ Convertibles, W111 sedans/ W108 sedans, and W113 "Pagoda" SLs with very unforgiving trim and complex curves like this:
You'd think a little old Type 3 would be a walk in the park on a glass install beside this- but exactly the opposite is true- and it's 100% due to the seal quality. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I'll add in that here's Woreign's thread link (I did a quick search for it).

He did finally get it to go in, but it was a bunch of work I don't think he planned on. On page 5 of that thread, is the install instructions from VW, but their seal is slightly different from the 1 you're using. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

thanks for all the replies and i was reading the entire thread again while the repies were coming out.
the chrome isnt comeing out of the rubber it stands off the rubber like one person said the the other thread. He used a block of wood to flatten it out?! This rubber just doesnt seem to go to the corners for being molded rubber. I had read the other thred before and thats what made me buy all new molded rubber. I think its the chrome. its just not curved right. like taking a revered U and trying to bend it around corners at an angle doesnt work.
I just doent want to destroy the chrome by beating it with a block of wood. I guess I will keep trying.
I will say the best rubber i found was bug pack cal look rubber. had the most coverage than anything else out there. Havnet seen it in years though. |

I put in a new windshield and seal in May, and I found I had to use a 12 oz. rubber mallet to fine-tune the fit of the trim before I put the windshield in the car:
The trim didn't want to lay totally flat all the way around, no matter what else I did. This was with ISP West seal and trim. It wasn't a big deal, though...I didn't have to use tape at all during installation. Also a tip I picked up from Woreign's thread, was to start the trim into the corners first and then work out from there.
If you haven't already, you might try spraying the window frame with soapy water so that the seal will slide all the way down in there before you pull the cord on installation. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

i left the rear window in and the rubber is laying better now. still not perfect or how i would like it. I will try and use some sort of mallet or block of wood to ge the trim to lay better. I have few odds and ends to put on but hopefully will send to the interior shop soon. next week or so.
it does look better washed. it was getting a bit of dust build up. driving it around the block was cool. it hasnt seen the street in long time and some of my nieghbors were coming out to look at it after i got back and parked in the driveway. got me a little motivated again. |

I know you don't want to, but it might be easier to take the window back out and get the trim fitting right first. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Haha damn right I dont. But we will see how it goes. If its not easy I will pull it out just to protect the paint. |
