Cool! Thanks. I saw one of the shiny ones and was trying to figure out if it was original and just polished or what. The screws look like something out of the engine but where I don't know.

Everett- no kidding about the bus.. literally in the weeds:)

I know they're Volkswagen because I have them in a tub of screws I picked off cars over the years.

Its an Irwin, made by Irwin Corporation of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, ca. middle to end of the 1950's.

Nice color you have , they came in various colors Red, Yellow, Blue, Aqua Green etc.

Cheap indestructible toy for children back then, now a collectors item.

Hi Volks!

Haven't been doing too much toy collecting lately, really trying to save my $$$$ money up for what Blauchen will need this year, because the VW show run starts soon here in Florida.

But I wanted to add some photos of a particularly odd toy I picked up about a month ago.......

Just like in coin or stamp collecting the odd misprint or stamping will create a rare collectible, such is with this seemingly innocent 1956 Volkswagen Oval Window Sedan toy from Dinky in England.

Sometime during the initial runs of this toy in January/February 1956 some supply problems occurred at the Dinky Toys (Meccano LTD) factory in Liverpool, they ran out of the marketed medium blue wheel hubs for the Light Grey toy and Green wheels were substituted.

This happened several times that first year of the toy, with odd wheel and also rare non production run colors.

Such is the norm with factory work/production, some oddities will occur, I've also checked and researched this variation and it is recognized as a true variation and just adds to the collectivity of the toy.

My Dinky expert in England says that maybe 200 of these *mismatched* Green Wheel toys were made and that it is considered by the Dinky crowd as a very rare, hard to find toy, I've seen this toy only once before, maybe 5 years ago in another collection.

Well, rather rare or not, I was just glad to find it to add to my ever-growing Dinky 181 Oval collection, I've pretty much have run out of other Oval Window toys to collect, so I've decided to try to collect up all the different colors and variations of the Dinky 181, there's got to be like maybe 20 to 25 versions, who knows?

But as I find something else interesting I'll share it here with you Volks!

Enjoy! Very Happy

Tom

P.S. Hope to find any South African version of the 181 and the Deep Petrol Blue 1956 version with Medium Blue Hubs. Smile *pretty toy*

Yes, they did that with at least two different colored non planned production wheel hubs and at least one completely different color variation in Deep Dark Petrol Blue.

The South African Dinky 181's are even more of an enigma, wild colors, with mostly spun metal wheel or silver painted wheel hubs.

I'll have to share some of my photos over at the site Bob and also see if I can get permission to get some more photos of the rarer ones.

I have now almost every *normal* Exported Production 181 that came to America mint boxed 1956 to 1970.

Thanks,

Tom

I got this at a community garage sale yesterday and wanted to know more about it, including value since it was a buck!!

There is no name on it, definite split window, 'made in japan', clock works with 'stop' switch in rear, no glass windows,
trim on front window, no painted rear window or handles, no interior, vw hood trim, narrow pulled in rear fenders/bumper.

All nice heavy quality metal construction w/ rubber tires. Has a key windup, but don't have key.

Found this.....

Corgi made a handful of toys featuring the *Trans-O-Lite* system, featuring two long clear plastic tubes with a collector lens at one end, (a primitive version of Fiber Optics), the "Toblerone" VW panel van #441 was a successful toy, especially in Switzerland were the original brand of chocolate was made.

It's not especially rare a toy (over 335,000 examples were made between 1962 to 1966) but it's a toy hard to find mint/minty at a decent price, but after about a 3 year casual search, I finally found one through a Southern Californian estate sale. Smile

One of my favorite toys as a kid, "one of the toys I always lusted for but never got" ~ I knew that toy really well as a 5 year old, but they were discontinued almost 6 years before that and every time it came up for sale someplace it was money money than I could afford, so after like 45 years of on and off playing for Volkswagen toys, I finally acquired another one of my "Holly Grail" toys, now parked next to my #819H Danish Tekno "Herbie" in the collection...... Wink

Enjoy!

Tom
