The models were made by Product Miniature Company (PMC), which was a maker of promo cars, but the VWs themselves were not known to be actual promos, as all official promos for Volkswagen were made by Wiking. However it wouldn't surprise me if a few ended up at U.S. dealers through unofficial channels.
Here's more on PMC:

The PMC Beetle and Ghia were made in a "standard" configuration such as yours, and a "deluxe" version that featured windows, interior, and chrome wheels. The "deluxe" (maybe the "standard", too ) was offered in kit form packaged in a clear plastic bag with a cardboard closure strip to hang from a sales rack.
Replacement bumpers and wheels for both the Beetle and Ghia (as well as lots of other promo parts for other marques)are available from Modelhaus
in Decatur, Illinois.

Good to know about Modelhaus. I didn't know they were still producing the parts. It would be nice if they showed photos.
I have the rare boxed VW two pack, Beetle and Ghia, which were sort of a mix of the regular and fancy versions (with full interior, plain wheels, no windows), in an unusual color combination, light blue and red. The set comes complete with cutout cardboard road signs and a sticker sheet.
Just goes to show there were weird gift sets produced as well. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Thanks iowegian! good information.
I will add a replacement front bumper for my karmann ghia, even though cost is almost twice what i paid for the toy in the first place. |

You'll still be in the black as far as value is concerned. Collectors love these "promos." _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Found these at my local antiques store.
I almost bought this one just because it's creepy and weird, also it works.
Then I found this one, the tag says 1970 and its described as a power bug
Just curious as to if anyone knows anything about them, or if they're worth much of anything.orange walking clown one says made in Hong Kong, and the power bug says made in USA |
Also found this

The 1970s may be wishful thinking on the Power Bug. Though the Amloid VWs (Note "A" logo in place of the VW emblem) originated in the '70s, they were produced well into the '90s.
Still, a very retro toy! _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Hi - does anyone have any information on this toy Type 2. I have seen these listed as Lemez or Film Lemez, made in Hungary, but I haven't seen any information on the toy or company. It is blue plastic early type 2, bullet turn signals, white plastic base with friction motor on rear wheels.

Thanks again, Blue Baron!
If manufactured in 1991, I guess it wasn't that old when I bought it. |

These are often mistaken for much older toys. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Here's two toys from a package I received a few days ago from Germany.
Marklin #5524/5E VW Barndoor Panel Van in Grey-Beige and #5524/2 Pre-A Porsche 356 Coupe in White Aluminum, both professionally restored with original Marklin Nitrocellulose Lacquer.
Enjoy!
