So I've learned much in the last while about vintage paint colours. As some of you may know, getting the L346 Mango Green isn't too problematic although, depending on how careful your dealer is, the actual colour varies from brownish to bright green as you can see throughout this forum. L347 Seagull Grey, or Moewengrau, is a whole other story because, as I've been told, it was only used during 1958-1961. Mango green was apparently used by Chrysler in the 1980s.
I was getting frustrated with all the automotive paint dealers telling me there is no way to mix the Seagull Grey because the tints aren't available. So I went to the source. These busses were painted with a Glasurit single stage lacquer. A quick internet search showed that Glasurit is now owned by BASF. I found a 1-800 number and explained my situation. They advised that I speak to a local BASF paint dealer and ask them to submit a special request for a vintage paint reformulation. I did so and was very happy to find a guy (Kelly from Carlson's Auto Body Supply - Regina, Sask., Canada) who is very passionate about tracking down obscure paint colours. He explained to me that he submitted a request to a European BASF paint lab that can reformulate the paint by re-creating the original tints. Long story short, I got my Seagull Grey and Mango Green and they look perfect. The Seagull grey is that light grey with the most subtle tint of mocha. The base-clear formulas were prohibitively expensive for me...over $2000 for the paint, reducer, and clear. So I opted for a much more reasonably priced modern single-stage formulation. I was given assurances that today's single stage paints are every bit as UV and damage resistant as the base-clears. We'll see. I'll post a pic when it's done.
So if you're looking for paint, talk to your BASF dealer and mention the special request or ask for the regional BASF rep (I actually talked to both). |
Very much looking forward to seeing the final product. My bus is base/clear now (P.O.) and I wish it was single stage. To much shine! |

This is obviously a very nice bus, but it brings up a question for me. Is this a version of mango I am not familiar with? I have seen this bus in a show picture (I think) and it looked the same. I have see other mangos that were a had little more of a yellow or brown tint to the green but they were still more green than anything else.
It looks more like my prairie beige oval than mango green.

Well...here she is. The seagull grey turned out perfect but after all my fussin' the mango ended up being the challenge. It's a little on the light side...but I love it anyway.

Hello all. So my bus is almost ready for paint and I just received my big Wolfsburg West order. Getting excited...
Had a question...what colour should the mirror arms be? I'm thinking Seagull Grey but I'm not completely sure.
Oh...I have the 61 standard a few pages back...she sure looks different now.
Thanks. |
Definitely an exciting time!
Just stripped an overpaint off my mirror arms ('59), and they are Seagull.
HTH, |
Jack, you MUST post photos of the '59 now that all the repaint has been removed. Most definitely "Mango Mafia" worthy! _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

Looks fantastic Wayne!
Full marks for doing that bus justice.
Doesn't look like it will be ready for Humboldt on June 8 though. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

Did a TR3 treatment on my bus, done except the nose and roof. Not as good as a compound, but for only $10, well worth it! Here's a decent comparison:

Looks like the Alberta crew is going to be me! Tough to get anyone too excited about Humboldt - it's not quite the bus Mecca of SoCal!
Trevo may bring his BD along from Toon town though.
