Sad Surprised Question Three things need to be done.

The bell housing can be ground away directly above the rear mounts and up near the starter. Those are the three high points. A 3/8 in or 1/2 in electric drill with a grinding stone will do the job or a strong flat coarse (bastard) file.. (not expense of a part)

Instead of getting a SR15X 12V used/rebuilt starter and having to replace the starter bushing in the bell housing with the special bushing do this.........

Get a SR17X starter from a 68 T3 Automatic trans VW.

This will save any future bushing problems.

The gas cable feeds into the tunnel next to the gas pedal and will exit over the rear chassis horn that holds the trans in place. Get the woven and not the sold wire cable of past yrs.

Yes, with engine in, but it depends if you can get under the VW if you need to jack it up.
