I have a 74 Thing with stock 1600 with the fuel pump that has a angled top. I had it off but did not see anyway to get to a filter inside. Is there a internal filter screen ? and how do you access it ?
thanks |

Sounds like you have the non-rebuildable type (common replacement these days). The rebuildable types have about 8 or 10 screws around the cercomcerance of the pump, along with a brass side bolt that provides access to a filter screen.
Good news is that the newer pumps are cheap, and that the kits for the older re-buildable pumps are getting scarce to buy (online sites have them). |

yes i think I have the non rebuilbabe type. Just to be clear there is no way to get the top off to clean? The fuel just flows through it with no filter?
On my Ghia I had the old German type that was rebuildable and had the brass nut with the filter. If I were to find one of these do you think there is an issue with the shaft throw to get the correct amout of pumping action? |

Because of my push for originality on my '71 181, I too had to have the original "re-buildable" pump. I found one on a 1200 engine, then installed it on mine (I also took the pump rod as well). Works great, it's the correct pump for a 71, and it's rebuildable, and the filter can be removed with no filter required between the tank and carb now (even though I installed an inline filter coming out of the gas tank). |

I block off and go electric with regulator on mine. Just one less thing cluttering up the shroud area and you can adjust the pressure to you liking. |

Just put the filter in line before the pump (outside the engine compartment). |
