Red needles gauges were used until early '64 on all Type 3s.

Not rare at all.

I thought this was an "s" model thing. I know my 65 square "s" has them and that beast is bone stock. Any ideas?

If your '65 Squareback has them, they have been changed or someone painted them. Remove one of the gauges and check the date stamp on the back,

They will work but the clock and gas gauge will be 6 volt, which is a problem in your '67.
