Hi,

I live on the Eastside of Seattle and need a bit of VW help. Specifically, I'm replacing my engine with a better sorted 1.7. Since I have both the engine and tranny out, I was thinking of taking the tranny to a specialist to have it given a once over, gaskets replaced, new seals, etc. I doesn't leak exactly, but does weep a bit around the back gasket. Anyway, two questions. Is it worth bringing the tranny to a shop for a looksie or should I just not worry about it? Second, I've never had something on my bus that I couldn;t fix, so I don't know any good repair shops. I know there must be a bunch, cause this is bus nirvana, but who is the best/honest/reasonable around?

Thanks!

Bow Wow up in lynnwood does ok work. In Seattle, Akers Porsche works on them too and they're good guys.

I work on my own stuff too...so I don't know anyone for day to day stuff.

I have as yet to find a Seattle VW repair shop I've been totally happy with. Have had some good experiences and bad experiences w/ the shops I've tried, which have been AutoVice (Bow Wow) and Buterra Motors. I read some pretty good feedback about this place and will probably give it a try next time.
Wolfsburg Motorworks
5010 14th Ave Nw Seattle, WA 98107

I know there is also a place in downtown Woodinville, which I have not tried and have heard nothing about, but have seen lots of old VW's at their place. But I'd suggest going more for reputation than convenience of proximity.

I have a friend who uses Hans' VW in West Seattle; I stopped by to look for a part, and they recommended NW Connecting Rod (correct title?) for some engine/trans work too. There's also Bug Master's in W. Seattle, but last time I stopped there (a couple of months ago), they were in the process of moving their shop. I too have heard some positive feedback about Wolfsburg in Ballard. Autosport Imports in Sea-Tac is where I go for parts locally, and they also do service, and I have had nothing but good experiences with them.

Thanks for the tips. What about the tranny? Does taking it in for a gasket replace and general once over seem over the top?

I have had trans work done at trans service in mountlake terrace on non vw's and and Dave there does top notch work, just haven't had any reason to takje a trans in to be worked on, he is fair priced, estimate is usually about the same as others qoute and the final price is usually under his estimate, and does all the work in house so he knows whats really inside your trans, http://www.trans-service.net/ heres a link also

I think there's a guy in Duvall that people were raving about for bus trannies. See if you can find them on a search.

Best of luck!

If I needed engine work up there, I'd go to NW Connecting Rod. But that's just based on what I've heard.

I had my engine done (79 2.0) at NW Connecting rod and they were great. They really know their stuff.

I had the tranny rebuilt at AATransaxle and they too were highly recommended and did a great job.

Good luck

I recently had work done at Wolfsburg Motorwerks
on 14th ave in Ballard.

Outstanding work.. brought my carbs to life.

Jack is an Aircooled specialist, and only deals with aircooled VW's and Porsches.

highly recommended

I had some pretty extensive work done at Wolfsburg Motorworks.

From my experience, they seem honest and professional. It's not the cheapest or fastest shop, but they really care about VWs.

I know a good mechanic down in Olympia. I'm not sure you want to drive that far though.

Hey I hope some seattle people will recheck this out, I think I have narrowed my choices of shop to wolfburg in seattle and autovice(bow wow) I called and talked to the bow wow guys they are 84.50 an hour and want 275 (bus depot says thats list) for a bosch fuel pump (2.0 fi).
**
I stopped in talked with the wolfsburg guys in ballard they seem really nice and really busy they actually gave me list of things to double check and asked me to call them back tomorow if i still need to set an appointment.
I need to move my bus asap its been blocking an alley for 3 days now.

My questions:

Does any body know the labor rate of wolfsburg and if they are fair on part prices?

Any body heard anything bad about autovice(bowwow), or wolfsburg ?

I believe wolfsburg charge $79 or $80.
I have been there twice, and they are very good, very honest, and very enthusiastic about aircooled motors.

it might just be the filter my bus has the gas heater on int and there is about only an inch of tube on both sides of the filter i cant get it off in the alley where its stuck so i think ill just have the shop look at it. I hope the ballard one has room for me i need to get it moved.

I need to get my engine tested for a vacuum leak, because its overheating way too much, and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Mouse Meat Inc. in Tacoma?
