Thank you one and all for all your suggestions and information regarding my Type 3 fuel Injection issues. I have decided to sack my mechanic and take matters into my own hands and with all your help I should get her going like clock work again. Will report back in due course, thanks once again. |

I have a 69 fastback FI with auto tranny. Engine is out of car and I was told it ran when it was in the car. Want to replace the FI components, starting with fuel injectors. How do I pick the correct injectors to purchase?
Thanks

If you don't find it easily in the classifieds, send an email or PM to Samba member:
jadney
He can get you anything for FI, including services like pump rebuilding.
Used injectors should be flow tested before use. Search for threads here recommending outfits that offer that service. |

Is there a way for me to check the condition of my fuel injectors, without running the car (before I go and buy new injectors)? I don't mind spending the money to put new components in before re-installing the motor, but don't want to replace good parts. Are there other FI parts I should choose to replace first (I already have replaced fuel lines).
Thanks

My fuel injectors have all been good, when I tested their spray patterns spraying pairs on top of my engine with the coil unplugged. We don't buy used/new parts before determining we really need them! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Thanks. Are the injectors easy to replace/install when the engine is in the car? I am fortunate to have the engine out at this time, and want to address anything that is easier to do with the engine out. |

I would say you were unfortunate to have the engine out laying on the cement. Better if it was in the car, so you could get it running to see what running condition it is in before replacing injectors etc. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Hey Everyone,
Is there anyone building a replacement FI harness? A few years back there was a guy on here doing them and I can’t find anything. I tore the wagon down for the final time and would love to replace my harness with a new one mine is in such bad shape that its falling apart. Ideas???
Thanks |

Jeff does great quality work and will set it up however you like. Since my car came with a cold start injector I had him build that into my harness. It will set you back around $450 but once you see the quality of the work, you won't be disappointed. |

It would seem that he's not very active at all. This is what you get when you visit his website http://jsmeng.webs.com

Send your old harness to Jeff to use for a pattern?

So I had to put a "new" engine in my squareback yesterday, the old one finally gave up the ghost. It's a stock 1600 dual port (unfortunately t's an upright type 1 so I don't have a proper oil fill/dipstick...) However I need some help getting the FI system set up proper.
It runs well, but at idle it hunts a bit and will often die. I pulled the oil bath and put my hand against the throttle body and the engine died so it's not a vacuum leak. Timing is pretty close, not perfect though.
Anything for me to check on or adjust? _________________ 71 Squareback, 1.7l T4 w/ crank trigger fuel and spark

Yes, check the timing, check the fuel pressure, check idle speed, and check the system voltage.
Was this engine converted to type3 cooling? If so, where did the head temp sensor get installed? _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I'll have to rent or buy a pressure gauge to check fuel pressure. Timing is good, maybe one or two degrees off but I set it the other day. Idle speed I can't check as it won't stay steady or running at idle for very long.
Yes I converted it to type 3 everything except for the dipstick/oil fill. And the head had the tapped boss for the temp sensor so it's in the stock location.
I also noticed this morning that the wandering engine speed is not just at idle but will happen at any speed/rpm. And I got one or two backfires at ≈70mph in 4th gear. _________________ 71 Squareback, 1.7l T4 w/ crank trigger fuel and spark

Also I was able to check the pressure regulator (not fuel pressure) and the adjuster screw is not loose so it should still be between 28-30PSI, although I don't remember exactly what I set it at last time. |
Uh...no. Every different pump supplies different volume. The fuel pressure regulator simply supplies a restriction. The pressure will be different with every pump. Sometimes a little...sometimes a lot. you must CHECK it.
It should actually be at 28 psi....not just somewhere between 28 and 30psi. You can deliberately increase the fuel pressure to a maximum of 30 psi (32 in a pinch and only with a GOOD pressure gauge)....if you want to make an across the board fuel volume adjustment without having to adjust the MPS.

Well the thing is I didn't change the pump OR the regulator, the only thing that changed was the long block. I will see if I can't rent or but a gauge this weekend and check for sure however. _________________ 71 Squareback, 1.7l T4 w/ crank trigger fuel and spark

I bought a water pressure gauge at Home Depot and a threaded & tapered fitting to attach 5/16" fuel hose to it. Clamp it onto your test port & verify pressure and adjust if necessary. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts
