I am not 100% concerned if I have Limba or not.
I know Limba was used in Westfalias at one time, most likely
the earliest ones according to brochures. I recall only seeing it mentioned once in an early `58 ish brochure I think.
The wood used did change through the years I have seen in a late
split brocuhre birch paneling mentioned as well.

I have owned a couple dozens split westys the past 20 years and there
are different woods used through the years. For instance my current `60 so-23 and `62 so-34 had completely different woods. I would venture to say the `60 looks to be Limba but the `62 has what looks like birch with a completely different grain pattern and plywood manufacture.
Regardless at this point in the game with this `62 so-34 I am looking for something, anything, Limba, Birch whatever that will work!

I think I may try to use the 4-8 with the vertical grain, cut them with the vertical grain and hope they will just fit. My other option is to buy a 5-8 veneer and use that on the 5-5 to fix the poor quality grain those have.

Yeah, the 5X5 birch available here is the same low quality you describe.

Stephen for my Westy interior I went to an exotic wood store in Mesa AZ and thumbed through all their 5 x 5 Baltic Birch, I easily found enough good sheets. I bought enough for two Westys mine and Jim Bell's. Six years ago they were $8 per sheet.

Talk to your supplier and ask when a new shipment would be arriving and pick through the stack.

have heard of a bendable birch that you can almost make into a circle..the crapper is...only comes in 4-8 sheets...not 5-5 as that westy roof needs. My question to folks out there...what have you used?
Tips or tricks maybe to get the 1/8 inch birch to work...?

Baltic Birch is available in 3mm thickness..... It is quite bendable. I used this to rebuild the long wall on my SO-23 interior closet and bend that corner by the door.. I found doing the roof wood a little tricky but, I hooked the sides in then 'snapped' the centre section upwards for a tight fit. It is important to have the panels cut to the exact width first though, or you will split a panel if it is not cut narrow enough.... Pmail me if I can be of more help, I spent quite a while doing mine....I didn't have to deal with subhatch though....

I went to the wood shop again today....I wound up doing what dragon did...I dug through most all the stack of the 5-5 baltic birch and found 2 pieces that matched up nicely one had almost no patches or probles.
I was more then happy with them for this bus and bought them....it was $15 for the pair.

You know Todd, I was thinking on my way home today. You need to host a 67 and earlier westy only event at the house!!! Would be cool the Friday night before the Sunday Toledo show?? Just a thought.

I just realized I need more then the 2 sheets I bought...lord how stupid can I be! I forgot the flipseat has wood over the driver and passenger as well...drats.

Greg, here is a pic of her, she had been outside baking in the sun the past couple days so she is actually a bit dirty, but you can get the jist of her. This is the cheap stuff actually, PPG OMNI SS with 50% 161 OMNI clear mixed in on the final coat. This is out of the gun and have yet to wet sand and buff her. I have posted some more pics in the original foum thread JUNK YARD FIND where this bus was found and it's story,
here is the URL for the thread.

Here is some definitive proof that not every year Westfalia used Limba.

Yet another non-Limba example from VW brochure from `63 first describing the optional "pearwood veneer" on the cabinets of the so-35 interior and again the "birch paneling" found in both the so-34 and 35.

Here are some of the interior panels from a '59 Westy (April '59). Does this appear to be baltic birch?

Great thread, question though my 63 so33 didn't have any roof panels ( or any other interior parts). Is it required to remove the sub hatch trim prior to installing the panels?

yes, it is funky to remove the trim, but the trim goes on after the wood, so take it off.
A rubber or plastic mallet and a heat gun helped.
I found sealant goo between the trim and the roof.

remove hatch,
the bolts for the hinges go through the wood ceiling panels. Hope they don't break.
remove metal trim around hatch hole.
Make sure the wood bows around hatch are solid/ not rotted.
They are often water damaged.
replace the bows if needed (I do sell them) blatant plug: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1229717
Install new wood paneling
Install your shined up trim for the seams. (don't polish off the swirly pattern)
Install the hatch.
Install your cleaned up metal trim around the subhatch

Clara,
I removed all the hatch trim, and am getting ready to install the roof panels. For the hatch trim, what do you use to reseal the gooey white stuff? It looks like the seal stuff from the jalousie windows but more plyble (sp).

Thanks!

I want to stain and Poly my roof panels before I install them. If I use the "snap" method do you think it might crack the finish? All that flexing and snapping I mean...
