here is a question i haven't seen posted yet. i've seen several pics of bugs without fenders on the web. i really like that old street rod look, but how are people getting away with it? i thought most states require fenders. i live in louisiana and the state troopers here frown when your tires stick out over 1in. past the fenders. i have a 73 beetle and would like to go fenderless. i even thought about using motorcycle fenders on the front mounted to the spindles. and make custom fenders for the rear. any ideas are greatly appreciated. thanx

Not where I live. I think they'd even stop you for your custom fender idea. Maybe not get a ticket, but get hassled.

Most of the guys that get away with this mod have modified the rest of the bug almost beyond recognition (chop top, roof removed, truck bed, ect.). I dont think they get hassled as much because it just looks like a cool old car of some sort. Look at the pics in recent mags and youll see what I mean. If you just take em off of your 73, I think youll have some problems.

in washington, the car must be 40 years old or older to run without fenders, and that's in dry conditions only. i'm building a fenderless 63 convert with a tube frame, mid-mounted 2.7 911 engine w/webers, custom dual a arm suspension fr/rear, 4 wheel power 911 discs all around. i'm sure i'll get stopped, but i'll have a copy of the rules in the glovebox, if they care enough.
