I am thinking of lowering my beetle and wanted to know what you guys think. I am going to be using AC industries wide 5 disc brake kit which says that they are zero offset and use them with a set of drop spindles and use a 6 inch rim with a 185-55-15 tire all on a stock beam. Will this work out okay? Has anybody tried it? Will it be too low with a low tire? Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure the dropped spindles are compatible with the disc break set. Are they A/C's dropped spindles that the disc set up will going on? The A/C calipers are not stock ATE's and will come with there own mounting bracket.

I spoke with someone who has done the conversion and said to use drum spindles. Because the ac disc kit mounts up to stock spindles.

depending on the offset of the wheels you should be OK

im running drop spindles, disc brakes, 6 inch cookie cutters (36mm offset) with 195/50 r 15s and I dont rub (too bad) on a stock beam, its totaly manageable for a daily driver

so depnding on the offset you should be good, I didnt know they made 185/55s, I think I needa buy a set (that should be enough to make by rubbing go away). if the wheels have a 36 or more you should be good to go... this is assuming your only going with drop spindles and not a lowered beam as well

AC Industries does NOT have a wide 5 disc brake kit for use with dropped spindles (hopefully within the next year or so they will have a kit available). You can not "make" the AC disc brake kit fit with dropped spindles. You can use an adjustable beam, stock spindles and AC wide 5 disc brakes.....OR.....you can use a CB Performance dropped spindle wide 5 disc brake setup. You can also use an adjustable beam with the CB kit if you want to get it REALLY low.

Its true that AC industries does not have a kit for drop spindles but I was told by a experienced VW shop that the kit will work with drop spindles as long as it was spindles for drums. It should work because the stock spindles connect with the discs and they are for drums so why shouldn't they work with these discs. I am kinda confused.

Personally, I wouldn't sacrifice SAFETY by some half-rigged setup. AC Industried is working on a dropped, wide 5 disc kit.....but until then, CB is the only one that has it. Don't forget, you're messing with holding your front wheel on, steering and braking. It's nearly impossible to get a good weld onto/into cast iron (caliper brackets are made from nodular iron). I drive fast and would rather spend another $250 knowing that everythig is "right" on my front end....Especially taking a freeway offramp at 70+ MPH

We feel strongly about this as well.....the brackets, calipers and rotors were engineered for daily use. Modifying them in any way to "make" them fit a drop spindle greatly reduces the safety of the system.

If your looking for lowered spindles with wide five pattern and offset isn't an issue we suggest the CB Performance setup.

I appreciate all the help. I am starting to think over about lowering since the 185-55 tire already lowers the car a good bit and I am also thinking of changing the battery to the front which should have a effect on lowering slightly and improve weight distribution. Any thoughts.
