|
|
If a vehicle has 523907 in the mcode for the paint code does that mean it is a S0XX camper? Or does it just mean it is a commercial bus by westfalia? If it is a camper where is the S0 code or where is it marked if at all? If not marked how do you figure out what SO it is?
Thanks,
Doug |

That sounds more like the VIN for an October 1959 bus than a paint code. _________________ fig

Westfalia and Commercial Codes
The following codes are usually preceded by 523
where 5 = export model and 23 = Model (Kombi) |

As Clara said it'd help to see your whole M-plate
523907 would suggest to me pearl white westy
look on your M-plate for something that starts with a letter followed by two #s if it has D23, B35, A42, or something like that then look at this page
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/mcodest2.php
to see what westy you have. _________________ Air and Water are needed to survive,

Kombi
Yes I am familiar with the list you provided. From what I can tell it doesn't need to have SOxx to be a westy? If it doesn't have that code there how can you determine what Westy model it is?
Thanks,

If the camper is a late 60s westy, one of the M codes is probably A42, B42, C42 or D42 and another one is 108.
The 108 code refers to the deletion of the side windows because they are replaced with louvered. The _42 code refers to the option package on your camper (if it is an SO-42, the most common late sixties westfalia camper).
The fact that you have the SK907 paint combination on the MCode plate would tend to suggest that the bus left the factory as a kombi intended for conversion by Westfalia, instead of another conversion company. |

The mcdoe the bus has is for Westfalia or commercial use. Does it have to have a code to be a westfalia camper.
I found a pic in the gallery of a 67 camper with no such code. Nwo that is of course assuming it is a real westfalia camper

There has been some discussion here in the past about non-M-coded Westies. They primarily seemed to be european delivery busses. I think most US-bound Westies had the M codes.
So what was your export code from the M plate? |

no, it doesn't have to have the westy M-code to be a westy.
I had a '65 westy with no westy code.
I think it was brought over by a PO in the Air Force.
I kept an eye out, and it seems that there are a number of euro sold westies that tend to have these features:
no westy code
no port code (blank, not UT)
yes with NA specs
no louvered side windows (no M-code 108)
have steering/ig lock
more likely to be two tone
no electrical outlet (sometimes)
possibly have the 'early' tent mounts rather than the 'later' ones?
They also tend to have more interesting options. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

That bus has the B42 Westy M code and the Tourist Delivery (UT) export code... |
...and that one has M-code 108
here are some no westy code westy M-code tags:
'65 SO-42 w/ dormobile top:
here is another:
a good eye will spot the westy kit from the formica pattern:

Clara,
That is very helpful. I have sent you a pm. Why do you think they made Westfalias and didn't put the code on them? Do you think they might have needed more buses then they ordered and ordered them after the mcodes were stamped?
Thanks,
Doug |

agreed
my 64 westy (subhatch)
no westy code
no port of entry code
6 pop out code
steering/ignition lock
2 tone mouse grey/pearl white
no electrical hookups
I don't think it had a subhatch code
the bus had lots of cool oddities _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

I've never seen a SO22, 33-35 with a electrical hook up. I think that was a So42-44 thing. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.
