Ok, I thought I'd share a few pics of what I've been doing. Feel free to tell me if I am wasting my time.
Intake before.
And this is where I am, I gave up getting the block any cleaner, but have put a lot of time in the little stuff.
What do you think? |

looks great... I'm in the process of doing the same thing with cleaning up and painting all the doodads and such, except I've got my engine disassembled and it'll be a while before it goes back together again... I have lots of time to do the cosmetic stuff while saving pennies for the rebuild parts. _________________ Nick |

I started back in October . But I can tell you one of the greatest time savers is a sand blaster! I bought one of the portable ones from Walmart, you stick the pickup tube in blast media and connect the air. Thejn just go to town. Use the proper safety gear though! If you use sylica sand be careful this stuff is bad for you, use a respirator or something. I did find that play sand works well too, you just have to clean the nozzle more often. |

Get some Mercury Marine Corrosion Inhibitor, which is the equivalent of the WaxOyl the Germans sprayed on that engine originally. Spray that in the compartment and in the areas where the thick waxy film it leaves won't burn away or clog something. Then you'll have the anti-rust and gunk treatment the Huns put in there originally.
I bought a can for Winston's new bumper--whenever it arrives-- $4.85.

Thanks.
I used a primer and rustoleum gloss black (not high temp). I don't think it will be a problem on these parts. The engine block may be a different story. I found the rustoleum that has the flat pattern spray nozzle. Makes a much nicer fan pattern and turns out better work. |
