I don't have a tach, but I believe 4th is about 3800rpm with a stock bignut. 35mph is the usual 3rd/4th shift point on a bignut too.

Ok then.
I forgot to mention that I am running 205/75/15 Grabbers. Reading up, I thought that I could actually go faster than 60 with a big nut.

You should be able to go quite a bit faster than 60 with a stock bignut, if you wanted to. 65 was considered the "max speed", but even with a stock motor a bignut-equipped bus will go 70+

My big nut trans (unknown internals) with grabbers CAN go 65 and probably 70 but it doesnt sound happy. I usually go 55-60 with my set up. Some say you should be able to cruze at 65 but it doesnt sound healthy to me. My 2 cents

Agreed. The owner's manual states that 65 is the maximum and cruising speed, and I've had my bus up to 70 a few times. I much prefer 55-60 though. I notice my oil temps climb quite a bit at sustained speeds of 60 and above.

I hit 73mph on flat land with a stock big but and 1600dp. GPS verified. It was scary. 60mph is comfortable. Stock 14" wheels... 195r 14 tires.

60mph is 4000 rpm for me. 3800 @ 65 would be great... Laughing

Yeah the noise and it just seemed really fast in a bus.

Read it and weep. Speedo is GPS verified accurate. 1600sp / big nut RGBs / late model transmission / 15" wheels. Took several miles of flat interstate to get here.

I'd say you have a .89 beetle 4th gear instead of a bus .82.
Because i have the same setup as you 205/ 75/ 15 tires and 4.12 r/p and i cruise 65 at 3800 rpm.

^^^That sounds likely to me.
A .89 fourth with a 4.125 R&P and a big nut will be within 2% of the final drive of a stock small nut.

lets do some math
mph = TD * RPM / (DR * 336)

TD with 205/75/15 Grabbers is 27.1" according to http://www.miata.net/cgi-bin/tirescgi

so DR = RPM * TD /(mph * 336)
= 4000 * 27.1/ (60 * 336)
DR = 5.377

so what gearing adds up to that?

Drive Ratio = 4th gear * r/p * RG
? .89 x 4.375 x 1.26 = 4.906 nope
? .89 x 4.375 x 1.39 = 5.41 ?
.82 x 4.375 x 1.39 = 4.987 nope

for 60mph at 4K rpms with that size tires look like your big nuts are small nuts and you have a bug 4th on top, just to mess with you.
(if my math is right and I plugged the right numbers in ?)

I do believe that the gearing is not as it appears for a stock big nut. I might be looking for another transaxle then...
Was there a special (one-ton, maybe) lower-geared big nut box?

Someone mentioned that I could slap the axles and big nut boxes on a later Super Beetle transaxle. Comments?

Thanks for the info guys!

as far as i remember there was only one "special" transmission, the 1500cc motor, in the lower weight busses. they had longer gears Smile

reading it, not weeping, though, i have had several big nut busses, with 15 inch wheels and big tires that pegged the needle. They did get noisy though. Also with 1600SP, my favorite, but my 1500 could do it too. Any healthy big nut bus can do that. I used to run the stock dizzy with the rotor that had a 4800rpm rev limiter. They did make a 5400 rpm one too, but that was more for third gear Smile

Yeah the noise and it just seemed really fast in a bus.

ezcamper, i recommend good shocks, good tires, lots of grease, adjust everything, and your bus will go 70 and 75, even in big wind gusts.

my favorite is: Konis up front, bilsteins out back, real bus tires, and a calm cool collected driver Smile

There was a mountain geared big nut 1 ton RGB with 1.39 gearing.
I have never seen one in the USA, but evidently they were sold in Italy (alpine gearing)

You can take out the RGB fill plug, mark a tooth with a sharpie, and slowly turn the drum and count teeth. Then compare to this chart:

Double check your numbers.
