You got me... my VIN number is 1442294756 with a production date of 12/13/73 and a delivery date of 12/21/73. I've often been curious of the VIN and production date of the last Ghia made. Anyone know this?

As far as I know, the last few cars made are in the Karmann Museum. I don't know what the VINS are though. I think the 144 2999 000 is not a real VIN... It would be interesting to know.

I've heard that the last 74 Ghia made is in the ghia museum and the next to the last is in Don Garlitz's Muesum in Florida.

The '74 Ghia in Garlits' Museum is all original
but no idea what the VIN might be...

The plaque says: "1974 Karmann Ghia
Purchased from the bank sale of a bankrupt dealership.
This original has only 27 miles on it. It is probably the best in the world"
Don Garlits -Museum of Drag Racing
Note the plastic seat covers and Window sticker.
If anybody wants to see this car in person it is located in
Don Garlits -Museum of Drag Racing
in Ocala, FL. Just off I-75.

Dang....just a few numbers off.
I'm guessing that the Ghia VINs do not go sequentially by an increment of 1 because the range of VINs listed for any one model year is greater than the production figures for that year.
If that is indeed the case, then these two Ghias could have been made in the same week.

I would think there would be a gap in Ghia VINs for Type 1 as for the Type 34, as VW would send batches of floorpans to the Karmann facility to be mated with the bodies.

I think I posted this a while ago. My pan and underhood VIN are the same. The VIN on the door jamb ends one digit higher. What are the odds that the car was in an accident at some point, and the donor car was the car that originally followed it down the assembly line.... Laughing

I think there were more VIN errors than people realize

Look at all that nasty undercoating in the wheel well... I'm not sure I would call it "the best in the world".
