I got it from my father in law, who had it a few years, and I've had it for 4 years??

About 4 1/2 years ago there was a thread about how many Ghias there were still on the road. I noticed on ebay that many sellers were listing their VIN in the add and coppied the info to a spreadsheet by year. Yours was the 3rd or 4th entry for the 74 year. (Mine was the 1st). Anyway, I still have the spreadsheet although I'm about 2 months behind on updating it. Sort of lost interest I think. Must have about 200 VINs and info. No names, addresses or numbers, just VIN, coupe or vert, City, State, and color.

Allen, very interesting. Shocked Could you tell me what city was mine listed in, and any other info you might have. Father in law got the car in National City Ca. from a buddy on a that got it on a lean sale. I have no other information. The car was bone stock and original (never had a jack under it) the miles at that time were about 7K.
Thanks for any info. Very Happy

I just checked my door jamb, it still has the sticker on it. Shocked
It's dated 03-74
So it looks like mine was in the last 200 built? (168 lower than last vin?)

According to Karmann, the last coupe was 144 2780 495 which is 168388 greater than yours.

No they didn't, and that's not what I said. The serial portion of Karmann Ghia VINs (the part after the 1442) fall in line and is shared with with regular type 1 production.

Gotcha Tom, thanks for the clairification. Very Happy I've been trying to find out actual production numbers for 74 Ghias. Is there anywhere with production numbers (qtys produced) by year listed?
Thanks

I know I've seen the data somewhere, but it was probably in dead tree form. I'll look around and see if I can find it tonight.

EDIT: Duh, it was right here all the time:

My 74 Ghia Cabriolet vin is 1442611465.

I think you have to separate coupes from cabriolets--not exactly sure how that is done.

There are engine numbers and body numbers too.

My engine is 376445.
My body number is 1019005.

I bought her new at Montgomery County VW in Rockville, Maryland on Sept 25, 1974.

I wish someone could explain what all three mean. I asked this question a while back--see

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=575998&highlight=pat

It is more complicated than it appears.

It a Convertible Engine code is AH472135. Production number is 245-9012. My understanding is this car was made on Friday June 14 1974. 7 days before the last Ghia rolled off the assembly line.

I think I may need to send for the Birth Certificate. I drive it every day when the sun is out.
