I need to get a new belt before mine wears out, but I'm still not sure what size to buy. 912 or 905mm. Everything I've read says:
The correct belt size for all upright Type 1 (Beetle/ Kharman Ghia/Thing/older Bus) engines (except 12-volt engines with alternators)is either 900mm or 905mm. The correct size for 12-volt engines with alternators is 11.3 x 912mm.
Does my 74 Thing with the stock Thing engine (matching number) have a generator or alternator? Hurry, before the belt breaks! _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

I thought I had read that before. Thanks, Ian!
Since you're on a roll, any advice on a 900mm v. 905 mm?
Cheers! _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

My local import motor parts store, which is as reliable as I can get here, sold me a GoodYear Gatorback #15361 11AV0900. I'm guessing the 0900 means it's a 900 mm, but the guy in the shop didn't know what size, he only knew what part. According to Goodyear, it's 35.500 long, which, if that's inches, puts it at 901.7 mm.
At least it's made in Mexico so I'll keep it original _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

Take my advise
Buy a real belt. They are not costly.
Go to www.oeveedub.com
Get the exactly correct belt for a generator or alternator made to factory specs...
They sell the stuff you were able to buy back in the days when VW supported our cars.
The wrong belt will cause damage and will not last. |

Thanks, K-mann. I'm with you on buying the best, but I still don't know whether 900 or 905mm is the size, or if it makes a difference. I read Rob&Dave's Aircooled pages and they say either one. I took their advice to get a new one and I'm planning on carrying the existing one as a spare. I don't see in Muir's book where it says a size. What I gather from most of what I've read is that 900 or 905mm will work depending on the number of shims you use.
What's your recommendation? _________________ You get what you get, and you don't throw a fit.

I use a Gate 7355 and I have an alternator.
I like the Gates since they have extra cords on the outer edge which prevents it from being thrown off at high rpm and from flipping. _________________ Glenn
