Ordered a windshield from this guy last week

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=445388

Arrived today cracked in a few areas.

Also featured on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...amp;rd=1,1

Two other people ordered it on ebay
thingamajig73
frankmis

I wonder if they are on here

Luckily it was insured for 100.00 and I THINK Post Office will honor it.

I'll email the two other guys see how they faired.

It was wrapped in cardboard with foam sheets inside.

The glass was surprisingly thin but I'm assuming it's the correct thickness.

Stay tuned

I have an original windshield out of the frame that I can measure for you to compare if you need me to.

K-mann, if you would be so kind, I would love to have that measurement.

Thanks,

My pleasure. My factory original Thing windshield is .210" thick. I also have windshield patterns available. You take these to your local auto glass shop and have a new windshield cut and most places charge by the square foot for flat windshield auto glass. It is cheaper than you think.

It's about a quarter inch thick on this windshield.

Is it possible that I can just have the measurements top, side bottom.

I will probably end up getting it locally cut although one quote was about 200.00

Search that on Samba it had been posted. But the corners are rounded and without the pattern the windshield will have a different shape than it had as a factory item. That is why I made the patterns from a factory original windshield.

Appreciate the info. What's the difference in shape? It looks like straight trapezoid just eyeballing it.

I've been through this exercise over here in UK... the glass shop just bevel the laminated edges and chamfer a 10mm arc on each corner of the screen. They make greenhouse panels and even fitted the last screen into it's rubber and surround to check fit. Great guys Laughing

I would really love to have the measurements for the windshield. I am going to have someone make me one as well. I bought one on the samba from a great lady in Florida, but it arrived from greyhound broken. I insured it for $200.00 and now greyhound says they have an agreement with the National Auto Glass shippers group, (right!) and they don't insure against breakage of windshields, even though they insured it against breakage....... Wow, I'm rambling......Anyway, I would love to have the measurements. I already have the frame and the seal.

I think we are part of a larger windshield scam.

Easy to sell them, always delieved cracked.

Good for seller, bad for buyer. Buyer now has to spend time getting claim money.

Measured from the center

Top 25 1/4
Bottom 27
Vertical 15 3/8

Double those to get the full lengths.

The glass is quarter inch thick laminate.

The sides are beveled and the corners are rounded.

That's what I have so far and that's what I'm going with.

I've heard of quotes as low as 50 to 100.

I living in San Francisco it was 150-200 but I'll give it another shot.

Freak,

Let me know if you find a glass cutter locally or in the Bay Area. I was afraid to buy from that guy too since the glass may not be boxed correctly. German Motorworks does not ship theirs, and the last one I had to purchase from the Thing Shop and they build a sturdy crate out of wood to send it in.

Apparently he had another customer have theirs arrived cracked, insurance did cover it but it's a win win situation to sell those windshields.

Thing shop also ships theirs in thick foam I think.

I would trust this shop as well

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=310019

But I want to find something locally first.

FreakCity, I'm down here in the South Bay with a cracked windshield and K-mann's template. Just haven't gotten around to getting it cut. If you want, we can go in for a buy together and see if a shop will cut 2 cheaper than 1 and use the template.

FreakCity,

That Econo place advertised the windshield for 124 but when you go to their site it is ten dollars more and then they only ship via Fed Ex which is bucks. There has to be a place in the Bay Area that cuts glass.

The last time I replaced my windshield (2002, IIRC) I had a glass shop in Oakland cut it. It was pretty cheap, but I don't remember the price.

I'll check around locally here in the South Bay. I'm not averse to running up to SF or Oakland.

Just replaced mine, any auto glass shop should be able to do it.They
can get the flat laminate glass SA1 rated, think I got that right. They
used my cracked windshield as template and it was no problem.

Ian let me know if you find a place that'll cut it cheaper for two.

If it's a 20 bucks difference I'll just find something within SF.

I didnt get a chance to call any glass stores today but tomorrow I will for sure.

I received a broken windshield just a couple of weeks ago. I haven't completed my transaction yet since the agreement was that I (yes I) take car of the claim to DHL and he would refund some of the money, I take the windshield to a local glass place, pay for it which would leave me with a total of about $60 for the windshield. Since I'm in no hurry, I don't have a problem... yet. However, I am still waiting on the claim crap from DHL. It's only been about a week since I filed the claim. I am waiting for the $100 form DHL.
