Wythac, Great guidance, I went by a fabricator today with picture of a simple cage. One of the pictures is your buggy.
I am also going for the third iteration of the strap. I think I may have built it to snuggly up to the die rather than the pipe. _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

I loaded my Street Buggy on a trailer and took it to 3 Fab Shops one day. I ended up going with a guy that has been building and repairing Race Cars for over 50 years. He is going to fab up a area around the back of the chassis to clean it up a little. Then he will build out the floor pieces, floor cross members that will mold over the center tunnel, front and back hoops, a center cross member in the rear hoop to install 3 point seat belts, center cross member front hoop to install the steering column, cross members between the front and back hoops, and down posts for looks in the back. The top half of the cage will be removable so that I can remove the body a little more easily to work on it, or should I say be honest and say repaint the body from time to time. I will be making up my mind on if I want side cross members between the front and the back hoop on Tuesday. He gave me an estimate of $1500.00, and I have added a few ideas. I am expecting to pay between $1700.00 and $2000.00, I will let you know when I pick it up. Just watch my build thread I will be posting photos as well as the finial price. |

In the next couple of weeks I will be ordering 10 joints (I will get a price break at 10 joints) of 1 5/8 inch CREW tubing at $ 4.12 per foot, tax included.
I am figuring around 100 feet of tubing in my cage. That is $ 412.00 just in tubing. It does not include the welding supplies, additional plate steel, grinding wheels, a couple hole saws for the tubing notcher, electric for the welder, labor, overhead and profit. My cage will be more extensive than a 6 point cage, but will include custom bumpers and side impact protection.
In addition to my buggy build, I am building a '56 oval into a baja that will also have a cage, rock sliders, custom bumpers and so forth.
I cannot afford to pay a fabricator to build my design. So... I modify and use my HF Kinker to get er done. I turn my labor/time into the finished product I desire.
If you do not have the tools or the ability to imagine the design and go from a thought in your head to a finished product, finding a fabricator just may be the best route to go. Screwing up a couple bends on a main hoop will cost you more in the long run in wasted tubing. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

The "knockdown" cage I was thinking of buying was from Neil at Hawkeye Buggies, like the one on Murzi's buggy. My decision not to go that route had nothing to do with the quality of Neils work, I was ready to pull the trigger. It was more that when I considered that for the cost of the cage and shipping from TX, I could throw a few extra hundred (OK, several hundred) bucks toward an upgrade of my welding equipment to a new wire feed and a bender.
I think I was into the materials (about 100ft of 1.5" .120 wall DOM) about 4-500 bucks....same material today would be about double. If I had to do it again today I would use CREW metal tube. Add the cost of a new wire feed and a bender to that and my cost was over 2K...but I still have all my fabrication tools and still use them on other things, so that cost is amortized.
I would say that unless you considering doing more tube work once your cage is done, if you can find someone to do it for 1500-2000 bucks you are doing really well...most everything else you need you can do with simple metal fab tools, grinders, and a stick welder. |

I tried the screw down strap method without success. I think it may be the 1.25 tubing in the 1.33 die.
I am going to try the 1" next. I would like to build my cage out of smaller diameter tubing to limit the interferences.
Did you special order 1.625" (1 5/ tubing? The down side to ordering is the vendor never gives discounts on orders, I can get drops for 1/2 price.

Yes, I had to order the 1 5/8 tubing. It takes two days to come in after ordering. My supplier normally carries 3 to 4 sticks of the tubing on stock, but they have a truck running from Chicago on Tuesdays and Thursdays. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

I work for a company that manufactures DOM tubing from 12.500 OD down to 1.000 OD, and they sell it to employees (scrap) for 6 cents per pound. I am using 1.750 X .120 1026 DOM for my rail, but they only let us buy 1000 pounds per year. |

Hawkeye will. You will just have to do some good measuring and he will weld one up for you. Give them a call. Very reasonable too. You can pick it up when you come to Texas for the Buggy round up for LaborDay _________________ Thunderbug by Bugformance 1969 |
