As some of you may have noticed I am always asking on this board for WI Thing owners or even NEAR WI Thing owners. I never find any near me.
Today I SAW one! I was so excited I pulled a U-turn and drove a little tiny bit faster than posted to catch up. Well by the time I caught up I was halfway to the next town. I FINALLY got up on them and waved frantically. They smiled and waved back LOL So I trailed them for several more miles until we came into the next town and hit a stop light. Then I rolled my window down, leaned out and yelled "CAN YOU PLEASE PULL OVER???" (At this point you must all be sure I am nuts. I can assure you that my DH would back you up on that.) Well to my surprise instead of calling the police for a stalker they pulled over! I talked to them for over an hour (Really nice people) in a parking lot and it turns out they live about a half an hour away from me! I was SOOO excited to talk to them and see their Thing close up. They told me about some other Things not too far away from me, and a local club that they and some other Thing owners belong to.
Anyway it was awesome to meet another Thing owner right here in my area so I thought I would share my story

I always wave to other classic VW drivers, but I haven't found any that repsonded. I think for them their VW is just a car, not a passion like for the rest of us... |

I wouldn't do that in my town for fear of drawing gunfire. |

Hey Kherome ,Did you ask them for a good mechanic to work out the bugs in your thing. BTW I figured you were not driving your thing when you said you rolled down your window and asked them to pull over.
I guess living in a small town has its advantages . There are not many times I could have asked someone to pull over without road rage being involved when I was living in So. Cal In my small town of Kailua Oahu people wave and smile at me Daily . Its a very welcome change. |

My 19-year-old daughter has a Jeep Wrangler and they all wave to each other - but there are rules:
-only use one or two fingers
-waving hand must never leave the steering wheel
-only wave at Wranglers (no other Jeep models)
-ignore 4-door Wranglers ("they're not REAL Jeeps")
-only driver can wave (waving passengers get yelled at)
I think that's it....

I couldn't stand living somewhere where I had a reasonable expectation of being shot at for doing what I did I admit it was unusual but I think I am pretty harmless and they were guilty of driving a REALLY cool car so they have to expect some attention.
I did ask about a mechanic! They said there was a guy in his 50s who's been into the busses, beetles and things since they were new and apparentlly he has some spare parts and a lot of knowledge to get things running. If I have any problems I'll be sure to see him.
Jeep drivers wave with one finger, eh? |

Sure, it can be a rough town, but then there's Car Hop Friday Nights at Bob's Big Boy in Burbank. Life is all about balance. |

No one shoots at a Thing!
I used to live in Oakland. One night, a few years back, I was dropping off a friend in a seedy part of town. Took her stuff out of the boot, waved goodbye and drove down the street. I realized that I hadn't secured the hood so I stopped in the street (it was a small side street). I got out of the car and walked around to close the hood all the way and noticed this guy had gotten out of his car too and was standing on the sidewalk near me. I closed the hood and looked over at him as he laughed, waved, PUT AWAY A GUN and said, "man, I almost lit your little buggy up! Have a good night!"
"uhh... have a uhh.. good night!" |

Well how nice of him to not "lite up your buggy"
Those sort of places are not for me. I have lived in a larger city once or twice, thankfully not for very long though. I am not the sort of person who likes having neighbors, let alone having to worry they might shoot me. Hmm...well wait, my neighbor (this is a country neighbor, meaning he lives a couple of miles away) did almost shoot me once...but that was during turkey season and we somehow ended up hunting very near each other. But that is vastly different than some random dude pulling out a piece and contemplating my demise because I pulled over to secure my hood. |

I almost got shot in my thing,
I was trying to find a house and took a wrong turn at night, all the roads seemed to be hard packed dirt trails and thing headlights being what they are I finally decided to just park and take a quick sweep with my surefire 8nx. soon realizing that I was but 10 yards from some farmer's front porch, it only took one light to turn on in the house before I threw it in gear and bailed out of there.
Then on a future date i was tailed for about 10 minutes by another pumpkin orange 74 thing, always exciting. |
