I got tired of having to pass up on bus steering wheels because I couldn't get them off. I had to leave too many behind for fear of damaging them so I finally got around to making my own. Did this at work yesterday and tried it out on mine tonight. Works great!

Sweet puller. I've never needed a puller of any kind to remove pre 1967 Bus steering wheels. I just use a big brass punch & a hammer. Sit in the drivers seat, put your knees under the steering wheel and push up. Place the brass punch against the top of the steering column and give it a good wack with a big hammer. The vibration will break loose the taper fit and off it comes. No damage to anything! Paint is perfect and the threads on the column are still good as new.

Nice! Next time you're at it would you mind making a good hinge pin "extractor" for Bug, like they show in the 1961-1965 Bentley manual?? (I can't find a picture on the web), or even one of these:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=108584

I'd bet you could find quite a market for these. I know I'd buy a couple!

I don't have one of those Manuals. I do have the Bentley manual for busses up to 62. I will check mine and see what it has in it. If you take a picture or a scaned image of the one in your manual I will see what I can do. Anybody else that might have a picture you can send it to me.

scvw: Here is a (poor) scan of the hinge pin tool from the 1961-1965 Bentley manual:

Anyone have an ideas as to its internal leveraging mechanism? Or its VW tool number?

Thanks.

That's awesome SCVW. I bet if you had the time you could make a few bucks selling them or renting them out.

Joey: You can visualize the internal/hidden levers and such? Let me know how much it will cost. I'd be very interested...and I'm guessing so would others. PM or post here.

Or would it be easier to fabricate one of these?

Thanks!

Just prchased the steering whel puller from Joey (great response by the way) and would also buy the hinge pin remover, specially if you can make it work with the mirrors and cargo doors.

Sweet Jesus thats a nice tool!

BTW, this one just ended on Ebay, so if you want to start what looks to be a lucrative business, why not make a dozen or so of these:

Keep up the GREAT work!

Thanks for the kind words Gary. It is funny for me to see that first one now. Makes me want to hide it under my work bench or use it for a door stop. The ones I make now are alot lighter and more user friendly.

I took the liberty of hoovering a few pics from the e%^&^y auction before it disappeared

here is the text of the ad.

"The Door Pin Removal tool is a specialised workshop tool for Volkswagen beetle and bus.Solid steel construction.Removes both pins on all beetle doors and removes the bottom front pin on a a split window bus.Throw away that sledge hammer. The door pin removal tool gently pushes out those rusty ceased door pins.Ideal for installing that hinge pin mirror.Tool comes with 6 different size pins.Tool is in good condition and has had little use.Spanner and 22mm socket not included."

Hope this helps your handiword Joey. I like the idea of the multi pins for different sized applications

I just used the steering wheel puller i bought from scvw here and it was very fast and very easy to use. I brought the puller to a local vw restoration shop and now he is going to order a puller and also the hinge pin remover. thanks for making such a good product.
