Ok.. dumb... but kinda not.. I've got new welds in areas.. seam seal and THEN rust bullet?
.. and then in the engine area, I've scraped out all the old sealer (muddy mess underneath...)... light coat of rust bullet first then seam sealer?? |

Depends on the kind of seam sealer you're using. SEM and 3M both make flexible seam sealers that can be applied over bare metal and painted on in about 30 minutes. _________________

With any rust treating product, it won't work unless it actually makes contact with the rust. But at the same time, you might have adhesion issues if you apply seam sealer over paint, especially of rust bullet has a glossy finish. If that is the case, you'd just need to scuff the surface. _________________ 1975 Westfalia - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=516701 |

It's the lack of paint ability why they say not to use silicone based. I did one side of my jeep with body shop seam sealer and the other side with black silicone. Both over epoxy primer. The silicone held up perfectly after 10 years of salty winters. The body shop seam sealer contracted and cracked in some places. When I peeled some silicone off, it showed perfect metal underneath. I used it on floor repairs too. Sealed out corrosion perfectly. Just doesn't take to painting well. It would make perfect undercoating if it were cheaper. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

|
|
I ended up talking to a rep at Rust Bullet. There advise is two coats of Rust Bullet first. Then urethane based Seam Sealer. Then another coat of Rust Bullet.
Rust Bullet is urethan based so they should work well together. If the application directions are followed carefully. i.e. respect flash times etc...
I am using 3m Dynatron 552 & 550 Seam Sealer.
FYI: same advise for applying Body Filler, fiberglass, Primer
