Hi

How can I see the difference on the headlights for a lowlight Karmann Ghia and a later Karmann Ghia?
I have a pair that have painted headlight rings and the rings are more flat then on a bug. I have seen some Karmann Ghia´s with chrome rings that are more like the ones on a bug.

Please could anyone tell me the difference and what year they changed the headlights, if it wasn´t at the same time the lowlight production ended.
Also if you can show my a picture of the two style headlights.

Thanks.

Regards Steven.

For the low light
For the headlight I do not know. But for the headlight rings they have a dimple on the top, and the logo hella on the top, and they are marked “made in germany” on bottom. The rings haven't a rolled in lip.

On my 61.
A dimple on the top, and the logo hella on the top is different and they are marked “made in germany” on bottom. The rings haven't a rolled in lip.

Would later lowlights (58-59) have sealed beam units?

I think the 58- 59 american model came with bumper overriders, sealed beam headlights, all red tailights and clear turn singnals. But maybe someone knows better.

yes, for US, sealed beam. with the thin chrome rim.
to use the 'V' lenses (euro), you need the euro fat chrome rim/unit.

i wonder if your painted ones dont have the chrome rim fitted...ie it fits over the top of this painted rim.

I think the problem would be finding a pair of NOS Lowlight headlamps. I import these from New Zealand into the UK. I have seen the odd headlamp at European meetings but they are not cheap.

Even the chrome rings, with the Hella markings are hard to find.

What is the number on the lenses without the VW logo?

I have seen three different versions of the V type lenses.

Nr 1-71554 only Hella logo on the bottom

Nr ?????? with the Hella logo "A" (circled), and "NL" circled

You're looking at $200+ for the correct parts.
