It's better to point it into the vents, and squeeze till the extinguisher is done. Then wait!
If you open the engine bay, you're feeding the fire with what it wants, oxygen. I've never had to test this out, but instead of messing with opening the hatch, etc. I would grab my fire ext. and jam the nozzle in a vent and go to town. _________________ 57 PGSG 'Carpet Bus'

One thing about fire extinguishers is that you have to point them at the base of the fire for them to be at their most effective. Through the vents may get the gas or dry chemical into the engine bay, but whether it will reach the seat of the fire is the real question. Opening the bay will feed more oxygen, but will also allow a much more direct attack on the base.
Now, I don't have a bus handy to look at, but would it be feasible to simply shoot the dry chem up from underneath beside the engine rather than through the vents? It seems like even if the material hit the upper panel of the engine compartment, some of it might drop back down onto the seat. Not as good as direct, but would it be better than angling it into the vents and not having it all go in, or does the nozzle of your extinguisher fit in the vent well enough not to lose any? And would more of it make it over the engine, or stay on the side?
I don't have much fire extinguisher use experience on vehicles, I've always used a fire hose in the past, where there's not a limited supply. _________________ 2006 Jetta TDI Mk. V

I have begun going through the "restored" 1959 double door panel that I bought through Ebay.
The worst thing the body man did was to overlap sheet metal (behind)over a window hole that had been cut on each side of the upper rear side, tack weld it, and fill up the gap on the outside and beyond it with filler. I've removed the main filler and, after removing the sheet metal backing, I will butt/tack weld inside each hole with upper side sheet metal that I cut off an old bus body.
As seems to be the norm, I had to make two lengthwise cuts in the front shifting shaft coupler in order to remove it, then I removed the front shifting shaft so I could drop the stock frontend and install the 1964-1967 frontend that I had rebuilt and painted black. It looks good.
The body was painted inside and outside but has "orange peel" on the outer body, and what was supposed to be light gray paint looks beige, so I will be repainting it. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

Greg removed the spun drum from our new 55 truck.
You have to jack the axle tube down with a scissors jack to get the tire off:
The drum was bad:
The area the nut tightens against on was worn into a dish:
The new drum is Italian:

You should be fine now, parts don't break when everything is colour-matched. _________________ How to: Post Photos | Search

I found a little time today to button up the overhang.
I was dreading it like the plague but it just fell into place for some reason.

That is gold powdercoat by the P.O.
OK. Test drive. The transmission pops out of 4th. I suppose I should have suspected that when the bus came with a spun drum and no shifter. |

Got the fuel filter and pump away from the heater boxes and exhaust and mounted them so that they would be easy to service.
Bus has been "flying in the driveway" (up on jack stands) for too long according to the city. I've got until July 6th to "remove it" or the city is going to remove it on July 7th. It'll be running tomorrow. I might drive it to city hall, take a picture of it parked in front, and email the picture to my friendly neighborhood code enforcement guy. Funny, some how a college student could park his 350Z on the street from December to June without moving it and it wasn't considered abandoned nor was it towed. |

I got most of my "Uber Kombi" interior panels installed from Clara. Thanks for the locating holes on the back Clara!! Almost all of them lined up perfectly, amazing considering the screws could of been drilled anywhere from the factory! Still have the cab to do. I'll put up some pics when I finish.

Borrowed my brother in laws wrecker to pick up my 21 today. All the rust is fixed and only needs another a few little things to be ready for paint. Been contemplating taking all the underneath apart and painting. Finally decided to go ahead and do it before he went any further with the body. So now starts the process of removing everything from underneath. Looks pretty straight if you ask me.
