I finally remembered to clean up the gas filler door and area behind it. I've intended to for years, but never seemed to remember until I opened the door to fuel up. It was so nasty in there I thought it was body putty around the seams. Nope, just crud. I sincerely doubt that anyone had ever actually cleaned it out in there.

Give that paint some love. It looks like it'll buff out nice.

Yesterday, I was able to take the 1962 vw bus for a drive for the first time in 25 years! Thanks to scottvw, OgCalLook, and jonny1309 for EVERYTHING they did to help me make this day a reality. You guys are the best!

Not if you do it right, and use TR3 glaze.

Thanks for the tip, I was going to try Turtle Wax Color Back or 3M Finesse It-II. The paint is really thin on the drivers side, but you can still see a nice sheen on the passenger side.

I have heard the 3M stuff is good, too, but I have not tried it.

While I was at it also broke the gas tank! However, did a McGivan and drove it 500+ miles back home and swapped it for a phatchick juan! Razz

Replaced a broken clutch cable. I was surprised how easy it was with the help of this site. Thanks Samba!

Now to learn how to drive without a clutch so I don't have to drive for several miles in first gear again... Embarassed

it is very easy to drive a bus without the clutch. Practice it by simulating double clutching.

drive off in 1st, at a fairly low speed try to drive at constant speed. (accelerating and decelerating puts load on the transmission)
now, just take the car out of first into neutral. You will find this is not difficult and does not grind the gears.

Now, without touching your clutch. blip the throttle, step on it briefly, rev it, this will make sure that the motor driven shaft and the rear wheel driven shaft in your tranny both rotate at similar speed. now simply slide it into second like you mean it. if you wait to long or do it too slow it will grind, if you do it right it will just go in.

wash and repeat. Now, shifting up is MUCH easier.

when you downshift the same basic rules apply but you have the really blip the throttle.

Just avoid unnecessary shifts. 3rd is your friend. you can use it exclusively around town unless you need to stop. practice that.

now, if you have to drive it without clutch in traffic and have to stop....

coast to the light in second, leave it in as long as possible, just in case the light turns green before you stop...

once you have to stop, take it out of gear, and stop the motor.
Put it in second!

when the light turns, simply hit the starter, it will start and drive off in 2nd. leave it in this gear until you really need to shift into third, (avoid unnecessary shifts)

back to the double clutching thing, this will make it easier to practice the blipping of the throttle when your clutch is working

step on the clutch, take it out of gear into neutral, let off the clutch, blip the throttle, clutch it, shift, and so forth.

you will find that doubleclutching can become second nature, it helps with downshifts under load. Once you have a good feel for how much to blip the throttle, you will find it easy to stop using the clutch altogether in the higher gears. This is not bad for your transmission either. if you match your throttle to the gear shifts, there is no load on the gears when you shift, it just makes you a better driver, who also can drive their car when the clutch is broken, or when you finally upgrade to an unsynchronized tranny in a really old vw Smile

I learned early to double clutch old buses. When you are downshifting, going uphill, a double clutch means that you get no engine braking as you drop into the lower gear. Your revs stay higher where the engine has maximum power.

You'll need to vent the top of the phatchick tank to the filler neck if you want to be able to fill the tank completely without having to rock the bus to burp the tank.
