Fab'd and installed a new rear mount (not in pic) to support the aluminum block motor (2028cc). Installed exhaust. We'll check the valves and gas
'er up in the morning.

Ordered parts on Monday from Wolfsburg West to restore/place new flap seals into the fresh air intake. Hope to start that job within a week or so...
Also, finally started refurbishing the rest (the four I haven't done) of my Hehr Westfalia Jalousie windows.
It's going to be HOURS of cleaning/steelwooling (I've been using SOS pads, which are great actually; better than the 0000-steel wool I had started with the first time I did this).
Massive helpful thread on restoring them by many contributors:

Lots of small prep jobs to complete before Thanksgiving. We'll be attempting a 700+ mile trip (each way) from the Bay Area of CA to Seattle, WA and back.

Spent Saturday morning washing and waxing the SO42. I kept looking at the front door and kicks and they looked like crap so I painted them. They looked so good I took the ceiling panels out and painted them to match! _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

I got my bus back from the shop with the new ragtop installed, the wiring fixed, and the front brakes fixed. Starting to look like she did in 1962.

Tuned it with the wide band. It was too rich off idle. Replaced the urethane block on the rear engine mount with a rubber isolater to cut the engine noise & vibration that was being transmitted into the bus. |

It's true what the ad says about them urethane engine mounts: "It's the last mounts you'll ever buy!" What's not said is that they'll be the last urethane mounts you'll ever buy. Once you replace them, you'll never go back! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

Used some junk bug spindles, spring plates and some scrap steel to make a temporary axle-thingy so I can move the bus around without the transmission.

Any reason you didn't build something like this? Simpler to build and able to use on just about any VW.

I built one similar to that previously, but my 'parking lot' is gravel and it was a royal PITA to maneuver around. I still have it and I use it on paved surfaces for very short distances. This new one is stout enough that I could actually tow the bus down the road with it.

Understandable. I have two casters like the one shown. Both of them are pneumatic, one is 6" dia. and one is 12". I guess you could say they are dual purpose. I have rolled through my gravel lot and grass side yard with no issues. Nice to be able to spin the car in a circle, too. _________________ nothing |

Straightened a bent accelerator cable (wire type). I also remove the tube that I had going from in front of the tranny to the tube through the fan shroud. I got it off a beetle and it was too long for a bus application so I shortened it--too much. |

Pretty basic compared to some of the jobs you guys are doing, but I went on an archeological dig to find my front axle and steering components.
Passenger (LHD) side before...
And the driver's side after cleaning, for comparison...
...the oily sheen is degreaser that I sprayed on to help release this stuff.
This worries me a little - the truck appears well-maintained, but whatever the concretion was, it was hiding all the grease nipples, so nothing could have been greased since it was driven through this stuff.
It's like plaster of paris or china clay - hard until you dig at it, then it turns to powder and falls off (unless it's bound with axle grease and oil, in which case it has the consistency of old chewing gum ). Underneath it, the beam etc looks like it had been refurbished (doesn't look like 58-year old paint), so I'm hoping this stuff got on there relatively recently. Unfortunately, a bunch of the paint on the beam and steering components came off with this stuff, so I'll have to get back under there with some satin black at some point.
I'm part way through getting it off the rest of the underside now. It was caked to the outer ends of the top hats, between the top hats and floor, along the cills and there is a thin covering over the wheel arches that needs gentle scraping to get it off.
The truck was last registered in Corralitos, California. Anyone know if there's anywhere near there that this could have come from? |
