Your blue rubber floor mats are original and rare!!! in good condition. Look after them. A lovely addition to the Aero Papyrus white interior on the export deluxe . As to the panels, join a long list of others waiting for s/o to reproduce something appropriate.

since your bus is operational and you dont have to spend money to make it work why would you consider spending a few hundred dollars making improvements to get you nowhere? six volt systems work fine if you are driving it you can see for yourself. _________________ 1958 custom camper

well slow36, the bus was poorly repainted and starting to rust. I wanted to save it and bring it back to as close as original as possible. The 6V system seems to work great I just wasnt sure why so many people convert so i figure i would ask- Im really happy its 6 volt and staying that way actually, just another part of the bus that is just plain cool. Im glad most feel strongly about keeping it 6volt, i totally agree!!
I think today I decided to go blue as well so that original mat will be staying. This bus was a time capsule im tell ya! |

Well it's been a while since I've posted but we have made quite a bit of progress on my bus. Restoring a bus in Florida when you live in California isnt the easiest of projects! This past weekend though we threw a bunch of final paint and thought I'd post a cool time-lapse of my long weekend in Florida.
Ill be back in a month for final paint on the body and doors. Ill have a few cameras on that for sure!!
We're shooting single stage PPG Concept btw. All original colors, this paint is sick sick sick!!!!

The entire project is documented at http://66split.com too, click on a photo to see lots more in the album. _________________ "Safety-Glass" is not all that safe!! Make sure your aftermarket safaris have laminated glass, not stupid tempered safety-glass!

Well its not easy doing a project in Florida when you live in California but after a few long years and a crazy amount of work we finally painted the interior of my bus this weekend! I dont think i've ever seen anything as beautiful as a freshly painted split window dashboard.
We threw a lot of paint in places your dont normally see since it wont have much of an interior until it gets home to California. Lenny at West Coast Classics is doing the interior part of the project for me but since we plan to drive it from Florida to LA when its done it'll be fairly stripped down until we arrive.
There's a thousand more photos of the restoreation at http://66split.com
These frames were rusted pieces of crap when we started.
Yeowzzza!! cant imagine after the color sand!
I saved the sticker!

For sure a crazy amount of work. How'd the opposite sides of the country thing get going?

I wish there were some type of safety wire on those hatch arms. As your workers know, and I'm betting you know, those will kill and it is at the speed of light when it happens.
It's going to be a darling bus when it's all finished. |

Oh yeah! Those arms are wicked! Normally there is a small piece of 2x4 wedged in there that keeps then nice and locked in place. Man, if that thing popped up and wacked you in the face, ouuucchhh!!
So my "workers" are just me and my best buddy, we're both computer guys normally so this is just a crazy hobby. I moved from Florida about 10 years ago but 5 years ago my buddy's dad found this bus and he actually talked me into buying it so there ya go.
The fun part is going to be taking a perfectly restored original 6volt bus for a 3 to 4 week drive across the country in the spring. Im sure you will see lots and lots of photos along the way!
Thanks for the compliment. Cant wait to paint the rest in a few weeks. _________________ "Safety-Glass" is not all that safe!! Make sure your aftermarket safaris have laminated glass, not stupid tempered safety-glass!

Here's a time lapse I did of a day at our shop taping off and painting the interior of the bus. Its pretty cool, the interval is every 2 seconds. I think next time Ill bump it to 5 seconds so it plays back a bit faster.
I'll have three cameras I think for the exterior paint job. That should be amazing to watch! This one's pretty cool too though.
Check it out!

Best update ever- its finally painted!!! This has to be one of the coolest experiences of my life, especially peeling the tape for the first time and carefully putting the shiny VW emblem on it! It took a couple weeks of solid work but its painted. Every bit of it!!
We're now starting to put it back together for the big drive from Florida to California in the spring. That should be epic!
Now for the photos...
We started shooting the doors. PPG DDC Concept Sea Blue and Cloud White.
This made me get a little watery eyed!
Underneath isnt too shabby!
Just a few hours after the paint left the gun the emblem was on it.
After some house of wet / color sanding and some polishing! Amazzzzing!!
This is the big side! Its a mirror!!
No, really it is!!
Not bad for a couple computer guys. _________________ "Safety-Glass" is not all that safe!! Make sure your aftermarket safaris have laminated glass, not stupid tempered safety-glass!

So cool! Looks awesome, congratulations!
We need to get a side-by-side pic before you leave for Cali, though mine will look absolutely shabby in comparison _________________ Jack Stenner

I don't think I would have gone this way with the bus - simply because I like to see the history and would hate to drive it after it is done-, but I admire your spirit and enjoy seeing how some "amateurs" can do a great job like this!
Congratulations - it looks great!
PPI is good paint, I agree. Very forgiving if you are willing to wet-sand.
Have fun with the bus! |

For sure Jack! I wish I had more time to say hi when I've been in Gville over the years but time working on the project seemed to be the most important thing. Hopefully May 1st we have it all back together and can meet up!!
Atlantic, you did see some of these photos right? The blue was horribly wrong and poorly painted. Trying to get it off back to the original paint would have just exposed a pile of 20 year old bad bondo, lead body work and swiss cheese... not a good history to see. As for driving it, why do all the work if you cant enjoy it?

Well I guess its time for another Samba update with the progress of the bus restoration! We've made some amazing strides since we painted it over the holidays- its amazing how fast things happen once you get past the dreaded "sanding phase!"
Im in Cali of course and the bus is in Florida but regardless we've managed to make some major progress. I've made a few trips over there since then but for the most part buddy Mark has busted some serious butt putting it back together and making it shinnnnyyyyy!!
Theres not much left to do now so for sure we will be driving it across the country come the Fall. Ill keep you all posted for sure. Anyway, here are the updates!
After I left back home Mark spent many of hours wetsanding, buffing and polishing his already sick paint job!
The brakes and front suspension were the first things to go in, all the time we spent cleaning and painting the underneath was paying off!
..shouldnt have a problem stopping
So clean!!
The new wiring harness coupled with a bad regulator made the electrical system a little bit of a challenge. Note to sunroof owners, never loose the guide wire if you replace the wiring harness! doah!!
My bus came with 3 full sets of original aquarium glass! I spent an afternoon polishing the glass and choosing the best of the lot.
Still cannot believe how pretty it looks underneath and in the engine compartment.
We put the motor back in, notice the beautiful 6volt generator! If you EVER need a generator, contact the guys at CAE in Van Nuys, CA. These guys have been around for ages and are total old school. Such a great experience just talking with them.
Nothing like installing the sunroof over a PBR, chips, pork rinds and the VW service manual! Lenny, Rico and the crew at West Coast Classic Restoration did an amazing job restoring my sunroof for me.
Mark and Mark installing the sunroof. Proud to say that with the exception of a few parts like the sunroof and gauges all the work you see was done by us.
Alright... why are there two types of screws to the sunroof installation? Sure wish it wasnt 5 years ago when we took it apart to begin with!
1500CC"s of VW goodness! Love my OG exhaust!
The interior is coming along, the seats is more amazing work from West Coast Classic VW's in Fullerton.
North Hollywood Speedometer did a crazzzzy job restoring my Speedo, Fuel gauge and clock. 000000 Again, if you need your vintage gauges cleaned up, they are the bomb!
Even the tires and wheels get me excited!
After many years the rear of the bus is nearing completion.
In case you happen to fall over and look under the bus, its just as pretty.
After driving the bus around for a few laps it was time to pull back in the garage and head back home.
