I don't know what's needed on the beach, but the BFG Radial Long Trail T/A, or maybe just the Radial T/A, may fit your needs. The AT doesn't seem to come in that size. |

205/75R14s work well, too. No need to limit the search to just one size. My Thing is getting 7.0x15s next. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

225/70/14
What do these Numbers actually represent/stand for. my back tires are currently 215/75/R14 these are actual VW Rims. my front tires Are a newer rim and they are 185/70/R14
I like the yokohama tires you showed for the front but i need something good for sand for back tires.

the 225 is the width in metric
the 70 is the height of the tire based on the percentage of the width - 70%
the 14 is your rim size. |

I'm looking for a tire that will alow me to drive in the sand. I just need a brand that is good. It will be for back tires only. this is just to get me by while my husband is out at sea. I don't want to look like a complete idiot if i get stuck out on the beach. I also cannot lift my thing at this time. so i need to stick with my 14 inch rims in the back.

Jen,
If your hubby is out at sea due to deployment in the military, God Bless Him. If he's out at Sea because he got lost, I'll send you my cell number, we need to talk. Anyway, the tire I am showing is AWESOME for sand. It is a 78GX14 tire. That extrapulates to a 215X14 radial. Make no mistake, this is NOT a radial, it is a bias tire. It's awesome, plus it cost's half of the other tires. Any questions, gimme a shout. If hubby is still at sea, come by with a 1/5th of Pedron silver Tequila and we'll talk tires.

I just purchase a set of four Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTS tires (215/70R14). They seem to run fine. White raised lettering helps them stand out a little more. However keep your spare the orginal size so it will fit in the trunk. Opie |

I'd say your best bet for a 14" tire that will help with traction in sand is the BFG All Terrain, size 27 X 8.5-14. They fit stock wheels on an unlifted Thing. You may still get stuck with that size tire, but if you air them down when running in the sand you will have much better luck. You should be able to air them down to 10PSI or less in the sand. Don't drive on the hwy. at that pressure though. So, make sure to bring a compressor with you to air back up if necessary. |

damn! you beat me to that reply. i used to run my stock '78 honda civic on the dunes in pismo...not competitively but we had some fun. buy yourself a 12v compressor to air them back up when your done with the fun, and simply let some air out of your street tires, yes 8-10 psi is good. i rolled my civic on the dunes a few times but it was light and easy to upright and i NEVER got stuck. always carried a few two by four lengths in the trunk just in case though. for my nor cal expeditions however, im liking those bias ply's... |

A good trick for getting out of sand is to carry a few strips of old carpet and a spade. When the wheels dig in, you use the spade to cut ramps in front of the wheels, and then lay in the strips of carpet on the ramps. Easy to climb right out on the carpet. The whole shebang is very easy to stow in a small duffel. |
