Hi,
I'm new to the forum. Bought my KG about a year ago. Automatic. 1973. I love it. I'm starting to get to grips with the mechanics (this forum is a god-send), have had the typical "Hot start!" problem and have sorted it. Great to find a place to feel at home.

I have been a ghia fan since I was very young. Thankfully my folks had Ghias off and on through the 70's. So, when I got to the point of buying my first car was a 70 Ghia convertible.

One of the bigger mistakes in my life was selling it in 94. I have bought and sold a ghia since then (basket case). Perhaps this year I will reach out and get me a sedan, preferably mid-60s or at least younger than '72. Time will tell....

I'm 60 years old. My history with air-cooled VW's goes back to the '60s when I bought my first Beetle in 1968, a red 1962 model with a vinyl sunroof. I've been in love with VWs since. This one was followed with a green 1971 beetle, which was sold when I went into the Peace Corps in 1974. Upon returning, I married and my wife bought our first KG, a red 1971. This was followed by a willow green 1971 purchased in 1991 and most recently by a sweet, green 1972 KG convertible with a tan-colored canvas roof. We also currently own a 2002 Eurovan camper. We've also owned, in the past, a VW Passat and an Audi. Oh, I almost forgot that in college, my wife drove a precursor to the VW Thing. Growing up in Tucson, her dad, an engineer and a friend took the body off a beetle and fashioned a new, aluminum body that was remarkably similar to the Thing. It had a rag top and was open to the sky most of the time -- incredible fun in the sun. I may be forgetting one or another, but I believe between the two of us, we've had 9 VWs.

Our current VW, the 72 KG CV, had a body off restoration by the previous owner in 1997 and is largely, but surely not entirely rust free. I'm near the end of my work on it, trying to make it as close to original as possible. The latest achievement involves the radio. I removed the owner's Sony stereo, found a wonderful Sapphire XIX AM-FM, to replace the unused, in-dash Sapphire XIV AM, found an 8 ohm speaker that's the right size for the dash opening, and finally two days ago, received a NOS 1960-70 era antenna that is identical to the one I removed with the additional attribute that it fully retracts. Finished wiring everything last night and it sings!

Happy Trails to you.

42. I learned to drive in Dad's 63 Opel Cadet. Our neighbor across the street had a 66 Beetle, I must have been 5 or 6 yeRs old, I still remember him removing the fenders and storing it for the winters, it was his pride and joy. It was his one and only car till the day he died. I have always wanted one but it just never happened... I came close buying a 66 first, then a 65, both Beetles, but it didn't work out. Then this 63 MBZ showed up and that was my last year's project. It was Dad's other car. Still have it. The 66 Ghia was a buy that will never forget... I am doing a pan-off rebuild that I wasn't planning on doing. I am learning as I go, I have spent so much time styding it almost feels like I am getting another type rating... But I wouldn't want to have it any other way. Childhood dream that came true. That's my story. Planning on giving it to my oldest girl, she will be 6 in March... She helps cleaning the tools for now... She has no idea yet...Smile
Merry Christmas
