I've disassembled my heater for cleaning and painting. The PO painted the heater along with the rest of the car, and it just doesn't look right. The original color looks to be a flat black, but I've seen photos of the heater being metallic grey or orange/yellow. What have you all seen and what looks best?
Also, there was what looks to have been an asbestos lining on the inside to the firing chamber, around the area where the spark/glow plug attaches. It has all but disintigrated. Is it necessary to replace it? It's been running fine without it so far... |

The Type 2 heater I have is a bright orange and the 181 heater I just bought is that dark metallic grey that you are referring to. As for what looks best, as my Thing stands right now (orange, with a black underhood), the bright orange looks pretty cool (just setting it in there, not being able to hook anything up)... I plan on painting my car the chrysler gun metal color (that blue grey that you see on jeeps and actually some wwII Kübels) and I'd imagine the stock grey color would look great but as it's not painted I can't tell you - though I know for sure the orange would look weird
while we're on this topic, would anyone mind posting a picture or a full bn4 stock setup, just so I can see what "all" of the parts are and where they go... just need a picture on top of what was given in the manual - helps me work a little better _________________ // '73 Thing "Jeep Zerstörer" currently being restored / kustomized

I'll be sure to take some photos as I reinstall the heater and post them here... Thanks for the reply. I'm going to go with the stock grey, as the orange would clash with my red Thing. |

I started a page on the BN4 over on VeeWiki:
http://veewiki.com/HeaterBN4
Not much help for the internals though. Feel free to add stuff as you find it.
I've seen a bunch of BN4 heaters in old, unrestored Things (I'm guessing as much as 20) and I've never seen them in any color other than black. I think that orange heater you have is kind of cool - unless your car is green or something |

yeah, it's really a shame it doesn't look like I'll be able to use it... I'll keep it around and maybe so day I'll figure something out, but as of now I'm opting for my recently bought thing heater
I meant to add to my earlier post, I've only seen 2 BN4 heaters in Things in person and one was grey and the other was black, so I'm sure there are black ones (aparently alot according to Ian), but I don't own one _________________ // '73 Thing "Jeep Zerstörer" currently being restored / kustomized

I finished reinstalling my heater tonight. I don't have a before photo, but just imagine the entire heater being painted red, yuck...
Luckily, paint peels off rubber easily, so I was able to reuse all the seals. I also found a dirt clod inside the heater from where some dirt-dobber wasps had built a home. I'm glad I took the time to disassemble and clean it... I used spray on paint remover on the plastic end caps, then repainted them with Krylon Fusion. |
