Question.....
is a late type 3 and a type 4 front end the same? Do they share tie rods or steering arms? I recently switched to chromies and my steering started to shake a bit. i redid the front brakes and now it shakes a lot. My steering was really tight, now there is a bit of play. The Driver side front tire has a bit more than the pass. Any suggestions? _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Like a Super Beetle these things are notorious for shimmying. They don't tolerate a wheel or tire not being pretty perfect. Since you just changed your wheels that is where I would look first. Even though your front end may appear tight you are probably getting wear in several places.
Idler arm bushings
Tie rod ends
Ball joints
Strut bearings
Various other suspension bushings and grommets
Failing steering dampener
There are a few parts the same between a T3 and a T4, but not many. The T3 has torsion bars like other VWAC's, but the T4 uses McPherson strut suspension in the front and coil springs in the rear. |

I'm going through the front as per Ray's detailed explanation on how to 'fix before you run'. This leads me to tie rod ends. I'm interested in purchasing these and wanted to see if anyone had feedback or experience with these:

NOTE: Please see that the tie rods on your vehicle are not fused welded on the tie rod and that each are removable.
The kit consists of;
2 Inner Tie Rods 311415811C
2 Outer Tie Rods 311415812C |
Granted, these aren't NOS VW, but they do state that it includes 2 Inner and 2 Outers. I interpreted the quote as stating it will work on the models (in my case '73 412), but is not OEM or NOS VW.
Think it is worth a go? |

Looking for NOS is VW is not a worthwhile process of the tie rods. I sectioned some of them last summer. Well built...but many have the defective nylon of the day inside.
From what I have found...the best you an get...and will outlive you....are old stock (at least 15 years old) TRW. Getting hard to find but out there.
The two outers are the same part # and the two inners are the same #.
The two inner tie rods are bent at a 9* angle...and yes.....it makes a difference in lifespan and yes...you can run with straight inner tie rods....and no...no one is making the 9* tie rods except on special runs...and no the tie rods on those runs are not cheap at $69 each.
If memory serves you are looking for ES419L with a 9* bend for the inside. Thats a Moog universal part #
Right now you can get outer tie rod ends Lemfoerder brand which is one of the better OEMs for $9.44 each.
The Moog "problem solver" tie rod end......is a greasable design...but IS NOT to be used. It has a non clamped grease boot ...a hideous design. Its not that its a greasable tie rod end....but with a floating boot...it will have to be greased monthly in wet weather to keep from screwing it up.
Do not use any of the "eccono" brands of tiie rod listed in rockauto.
If you have a decent drill press I have a very nice mod for making a chromolly adapter to use a non bent tie rod end on the inside that puts it at 9* Ray |
