I wouldn't mind a lower note from the exhaust, a little less of the beetle tweetle. Any suggestions? With stock heater boxes?

Run a screwdriver into the pea shooters and break the baffles. Then reach in with a pair of needle nosed pliers, grab the baffles and pull (you will probably have to rotate a few times to get them out). Learned this one in 1979 Wink

I think it would look even better with a set of chromie rims with the caps. And yeah I think a black interior would look better than the tan as well. Those pans look great, car has a lot of potential, nice score!

Where in Iowa are they bothering you with that??
Yes, I know we are supposed to have one, but I've been running my '61
Ghia for years with a German plate on the front and my '66 Beetle with no
front plate. I never have been questioned. (but I keep the front plate
with me---just in case)

Iowa City - they make the most money off drunk drivers up there, so they'll pull you over for just about anything just to check you out. I never drink and drive but I also hate getting pulled over just for kicks. So I am trying to "blend" in with the masses as much as a silver ghia can.

Must be a local thing.
I'm just a few miles east of you (Muscatine) and have never had such a problem. (but, then, I'm a fat old man so the cops ignore me).

EDIT: if you need bumpers, PM me.
I have some (but they won't be cheap). In fact, I have a front with a Johnson County plate hanging on it. Laughing

Thats funny because thats where this car came from. I thinks its just a college town thing. They get a lot of eager recruits from the chicago suburbs who want to be someone up there, pulling everyone over and throwing drunks around. Its a good place to stay away from at night anyhow. But since I live to the south so close (Kalona (Washington County)) its easy to go to a movie or dinner there once in a while.

Some doctor from Muscatine owned this thing, and apparently lost interest. It seems to have sat for some time. I have a lot of receipts from Grosjean's Tire and Service on Mulberry in Muscatine that came with the car. A friends brother was painting the house and found it in the garage, then the next day it was out for sale (or something), he bought it - owned it for a week and a half then sold it to me. I'm pretty sure he got a good deal on it. Then I happened past it - told my wife and she arranged a deal to get it for our 3rd anniversary. Its gonna be a hard anniversary to beat. Very Happy

Here is the latch for the sunroof - missing something - I kind of hoped someone would know what it is supposed to look like and what it should do.

The PROPER handle might not be easy to find. However, to make it WORK, it seems you only need an L-shaped Allen wrench that will firmly fit into the center hexagonal opening. Go to a good car parts store and ask if they will lend you a single Allen wrench to see which one fits; would be either a metric or an SAE size. Then buy the one you need from them. You really need a wrench that fits snugly since you most likely have to exert quite some force/leverage onto the wrench to pull the sunroof tight and lock it; a cheap wrench will deform whereby one that "almost" fits will noodle out the hole after only a few applications.

That stud is actually longer and a T handle goes over it, then you secure the T handle down with a set screw the post above mentioned. I have it, don't like it....

I've been running front plate-less for over a year in Iowa and never had a problem. I'm not fat or old (as old as Chuck anyway)! But I also keep the plate with me with a practiced, "It just feel off two miles ago" look.

Nice Ghia splittyshorty.

I have an allen with a T handle that fits it, it seems to hard too turn, I loosen the nut and it turns a little easier. I think I need to take the nut all the way off and see what I am dealing with on the other side. It seems the seal is good - if I could pull the two halves together with the hook. I think the hook is hung up on something else inside - like if the stud is longer it may be at a bad angle or something. Seems like everybody on theSamba is from Muscatine these days. Did they have a VW dealership over there or something?

Sorry I'm not from Muscatine (rode a bicycle there once though..) I think the first quote mark was deleted making it read as if I did. I'm located just south of Waterloo.

You should repost your pictures. None of the ones of the car no longer display.

Thats as it was when i got it. This thread apparently is too old to edit, so unfortunately the first pictures can't get relinked. I am going to try and put the pictures back to the addresses I used if possible.

These are the rivieras I had powder coated, then painted the black and the luggage rack on the lid
