thank you so much for the carpet pic , but i have the other type of crotch cooler`s cover ....the one that deflects the air towards the firewall and has articulated crotch cooler arms ...

shape of the carpet is also different ....

I'm also making a battery sticker for my 50 shortly also, it is a nice touch.

Wolfsburg Warehouse (Bill Diereckx sp?) currently sells one style of the red/yellow text Bosch sticker for $4 or $5 each I think, has the early script Bosch letttering, but the resolution quality is lousy. There is also a later (but not sure when the text changed) block letter Bosch text sticker badge. I've only seen original block letter version on original batteries on splits for some reason.

Originally the stickers were not just stickers though, they were affixed to thin metal backing plates with a turned rounded edge, similar to a jacket button pin actually but flatter. I've also seen the Varta badge/sticker but have never seen that one on a car or how it was made. The difficulty in putting just a sticker on alot of 6V batteries today is that the sides and front of batteries are molded with a fluted or lightly corrugated surface pattern, making it hard to affix just a sticker and have it look right. So you also need the original metal plate as well not to just make it look correct but fit nice, which you can cut out of perhaps a thin sheet of aluminum.

I'm making a few for myself which I simply print on a photo quality inkjet printer on gloss coated sticker paper and then spray with clear fixative, no silkscreener needed and the resolution is perfect. Then will cut out the backing plate on the circle cutter here and apply some adhesive to the back of the plate. I need to find a way to post up a vectorized art file of the sticker so folks could print their own if interested, sometime maybe this fall.

Gary

The battery Wolfsburg West sells has the round flat circle on the front of the case like the original Bosch batteries had. No Bosch decal, but the place is there to put one.

The batteries used, like many items, are DIN standard. Lots of manufacturers make batteries to the norm. Not only Bosch. That circle is a standard, too. All batteries in the family have it.

In my case my car came with a Hagen brand battery. Through research and using my German skills I was able to get an idea of what my sticker should look like.

Some car makers list the battery brand on the build sheet. There also came warranty info and/or card with your car or attached to the battery.

This is a subject much discussed for cars where you see the battery easily when say the hood is open.

I started a related thread in the barndoor forum. I am looking to replicate the Varta battery that came with my '54 bus. The thread is here:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=257768

All the old batteries from the 50's that I have seen did not have stickers on them. They were adorned with 3 dimensional hard plastic / rubber labels affixed to the side of the battery. Here are two examples of training school batteries I got in Germany:

For my bus I am trying to identify the correct battery cover as well. From the ads running here on the samba and referencing the owners manual for my bus, it looks to be the same cover as split beetle. Notice that the cover has 3 slots. Are all three slots used on a split beetle? Any information on the cover type is appreciated. Can you guys share images of your original split battery covers and let me know if you think the "bus" cover shown below is the same. Thanks!

I have an old Hagen cutaway battery and some Hagen porcelain signs. I would be interested to see what you came up with.

Here you can see the slots of Split battery cover, I believe that it's identical with barn door's.

Thanks for the reply.

The one in the ad looks newer with the tabs holding the insulation in place versus rivets like in the owners manual illustration. Do you know when the change was made away from rivets?
