How about a 2180cc that will last more than 25k, is plenty fast and match that with a Berg 5 speed tranny for around $12k.

I'd build a nice 2276.

Dont have to go stupid crazy.

Use 94mm cima (B) stroker pistons/cyl
Magnesium case with silicon/bronze lifter bores sleeved or CB aluminum aftermarket case.
webcam 86B
CB 28mm lightweight lifters or more $$$ Udo becker tool steel lifters (like the oldschool tool steel wiezmans)
CB Hbeams with 5/16 arp 2000 rod bolts or beefier scat H beams with 3/8 rod bolts

The longevity thing is covered if you use silicon bronze sleeves since thats the typical wear issues over a period of time. Flat cams are a common problem but if you use good lifter like the cheaper "somewhat proven" 28mm cb lifter or the Udo becker tool steels are having phenominal results.

I'm not suprised if the 5 speed kit is gonna be in stock for a long long time.

go with 4.12 r/p with stock gears. Get the beefier components and welded 3rd and 4th gears. You can beat her hard in 1-3 gears and 4th for the freeways in Cali.

OR

a common short gear box with some comfortable gear ratio spreads is a 4.12 r/p with stock 9tooth first/2nd and a 1.48, 1.14 or a 1.48, 1.04.

cylinder head combinations are a totally different topic. Lotsa stuff out there now.

kennedy Stage 1 with a Art thraen copperhead disc or super daiken disk will work great for a street car.
