I recommend you get a book by Chris Barber called "Birth of the Beetle". It concentrates on the pre-war and war time history of VW. It also covers extensively the prototypes including the VW30.
To answer the second part of your question: the prototypes were officially destroyed in the early '40ies, but as I heve learned, a Samba member in Germany has a chassy and some parts from one of them, so other bits and pieces may have survived also. As far as complete cars - highly unlikely, but you never know...
BTW Great pics of the replica, VOLKSWAGENSRULE. I really enjoyed those. |

That replica is too cool. Are there any pictures with the engine lid open? With the VW30s, I've always been curious whether there's a firewall between the passenger compartment and engine, and how the decklid would interface with that. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

Here you go! I don't think this is the same car though. There more than one replica out there. Anyone know for sure?
Enjoy! |

My back aches from just looking at those seats. Can you imagine sitting on those for 300 miles over 1930's roads? |

This is a another (!) VW30 replica, that has been constructed for Belgian VW-importer D'Ieteren. This example is one of the many fine cars in their private museum in Brussels, the '"D'Ieteren Gallery".

@splitjunkie: I've heard figures of around 100.000 Euro... (for one)

Thanks Paul for the great info! I was thinking that, as I noticed the Belgian plates on it. I really like that car. I think the proportions of it are far better than the blue German version. Seems it matches the genuine VW30 cars more percise.
I really wonder just how difficult it is build one (not that I would try to do that at any time soon). OK the bodywork is one thing. Considering that the original prototypes were pretty much hand built, a talanted bodyman could duplicate the panels. Then what about the machanical side. Would they use KdF era parts, that would make the project kinda expensive. Later parts would make it look odd. Then there are all the bits and bobs like door handles, lights, switches, wheels....
My guess is that on the original prototypes they used what ever was available in the general parts bin at that time, so if one was to try and build a replica now, they would have to trace the parts that may have been scavenged off other cars of that era. Anybody knows about this? |

I see your point, but imagine 300 miles over 1930's roads in this:
Those seats start to look a litte more comfy... _________________ 1964 Type 1 |

This is great stuff! Now I just wonder if the broomstick decklid prop was as per Herr Porsche OG design or is this a hoodride influence?
Seen on both cars...
And a question to the split bug pervs: Are these KdF era motors they use in those replicas? They sure seem to me, but I'm no expert. |

Thanks everyone for all the great information and pics. Those replicas are pretty cool. Ill have to go check out that book to.
what i like about the VW 30 is the rear grille-like window and the front styling with the headlights slightly protruding. It makes it look classy, like the big cars of the 20's-30's.
thanks everyone again for all of the info.
Yeah i would hate to ride in those seats too! |
