|

Does anyone else consistenly mark their legs or pants with black soot anytime they brush up against the black rubber bumper overriders?
Wouldnt it be nice if they were plastic/vinyl coated or even spray painted.
Would give them a solid, new apperance, instead of the chalky pant scuffing quality?
Do you guys have any tips or solutions on that? I wonder how show cars deal with it?
I'm sure there is a bottled product like armor-all that gets back their sheen but would it keep it from marking your pants or legs up?
Heres a pair on ebay right now

They are nice to protect the car, not me ;)
I've gone outside countless time watching the neighbor play bumper cars trying to get out of parallel parking lol.
One neighbor literally bumped my car 3-4 times as I was watching and he knew I was watching. He had a shitty 90s toyota camry or something. As he pulled out he honked and smiled with silver teeth.
No hablo espanol.
I'm thinking of putting orange cones on top of the rubber overrides or something similar. Or barbed and greased steel hooks ;) |

I haven't noticed an issue so much with the rubber over-rides...I have these nice shin cutters attached to mine. Everytime I wash the car, never fails I end up with sliced shins! Got to get a new exhaust system...

I've been looking for a set of these as well. Too bad I don't have any money left.
I just did a thorough search of both the Thing Shop and Thingsforthings.com (a.k.a. German Motor Works) web sites and couldn't find them. This isn't the first time I tried searching both sites. I know that often these shops will have parts in stock that aren't listed on their web sites - and vice versa - so a phone call may help.

I really want to add a set of these to my Thing Shop tube bumpers. Since I don't care about stock, I've been looking around at other makes of car to see if I can find something somewhere else. So far, no luck, but I've seen bumpers similar to this on delivery trucks.
I suppose if I can't find a set I could have one made - it's just a block of rubber with a screw set in it - right? |

Freakcity; try spraying them down with Meguiar's vinyl and rubber treatment.. let it soak in overnight. If they aren't crazed and checked up really bad, this seems to help out.
Ian; they seem to be tapered rubber blocks with about a 20 guage steel backing which is molded into the rubber backing. 2 - 8mm ? bolts mount through the steel plate and then to the bumper. The problem is that if the nuts that are used to hold them on to the bumber tend to snap off the studs (bolts) on removal. I have drilled out the studs and re-tapped the blocks and put new studs in. It works for the "look" test, but I have no idea on the "bump" test. I too have looked at delivery truck rubber bumpers and loading dock rubber stops, etc... good luck |

They aren't exactly square either. Mine measure approx. 6" W x 5" H at the bumper and taper to 4.5" W x 4" H. They stick out 4.5" _________________ PRAISE THE LOWERED.

Hey Ian , Horse trailers use that extruded rubber on their rear bumpers. you can find it here http://www.qtrailer.com/catalog/hardware.pdf
Page L- 18
Another idea is to use A jounce bumper off a big 1 ton or larger pick up truck. When trucks are lifted or air bag suspensions are added, often times this part is discarded . the fords are black and chevy's are yellow and kinda torpedo looking . I forgot what Dodge looks like. Both have studs impregnated in the rubber and any shop that does the above mentioned work has enough lying around to chock a horse.
Just a thought. John |

Just a NICE thought! I couldn't find any product called a "jounce bumper", I think it's usually called a "bump stop". Here's a great page of urethane stops:
http://www.suspension.com/Bumpstop.htm
#9.9104 caught my eye:
4-1/2" Tall, 4-1/2" Length,
2-1/2" Wide. 2 per set.
$78.00
According to the page, all bump stops are available in black or red. |

Yeah, leave it to the guy with the huge, tricked out Raby engine to pick out the biggest, baddest, most expensive bump stops on the planet!
Actually these are perfect. Good call Ian and Surfari. I'm in for a set of these in black. All I need now is $78.00! Actually I'll need another set for the front too! Doh! Time to start selling off all my extra Thing parts. _________________

Hey now, it's only $10 more than the rusty ones that were sold on eBay! They are no longer listed on The Thing Shop or the German Motor Works websites.
I've been skipping over the $300 (each!) stops I've seen
I was also looking into making these myself. You can get urethane mix, make a mold, paint the metal bits with urethane bond, set it up, try to get the bubbles out and have a part. However, the mix itself is pretty expensive and each stop would probably take a quart. Since I've no experience with it, the first few ones would probably come out crappy. I don't think I could make it for less than $80 a set. |

Now they are listed at the Thing Shop under "newly listed" -

$50 each - that's $200 for a full set.
Hmmm...

= $160 total.
For a $40 difference, I'd get the Thing Shop ones - they're MUCH more likely to fit without work. I'm getting pretty tired of fabricating stuff to fit on my car. |
