So the screen fits into the rubber seal that holds the jalousie windows into the frame, as opposed to being similar to a screen from a house, where it has a separate framework that the screen fits into.... |
The screen is on its own frame that fits onto the jalousie somewhat like a screen door. The jalousie frame is extended so that it fits into the rubber window gasket just like the original window did.
Here is a pic that might help.

Hello Geoffoz,
I'm sorry but I am thoroughly confused... |
Sorry
Just sayin
You can easily add a screen to a slider window by using the groovey rubber seals.
....this won't work as well for a jalousie. they open outward.
For the jalousie. I'll put the screen on the inside |

I would like to use 2 window frames to make a sliding window that would accommodate the rear plastic vent. Has anyone ever done, or considered doing, this? |
Yes, thought about but have not done yet. I'm thinking slice a Westy window and use straight aluminum piece to close the rear end. Then have new glass cut to fit. Slide plastic vent back on and hold together with stock window rubber. |
Saw this custom unit at syncrofest 2 years ago. You might have seen it also BenniBoi had you had stayed longer than 10 minutes.

It's sort of the look I'm referring too except it looks like the rear edge doesn't look like glass all the way to the plastic vent.
By the way, I promise to stay long enough for lunch on that Thursday this time.😏 _________________ BenT |

BTW staying for lunch isn't grabbing a piece of cheese while busting a U turn through the camping area to go back home... |

Love this. Looks like it's a standard frame just shortened and angled? I'll have an extra drivers side middle window to play with when I swap it out for the Jalousie window. Also have a a few on parts vans around I could try out. I definitely want to keep the vents in the window (have them in my possession but not installed yet)!
Anyone have some details on this modification? Or just start cutting stuff like I normally do _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

The rear sliders that incorporate the black plastic late Vanagon vents are made by "16CV's" on this forum on a custom made to order basis. The are very nice and not "leaky" My rear slider from Wellington is great and is nicely complemented with the OEM version on the driver's side. _________________ 1978 Sage Green P22 Westfalia

Ok, otiswesty, Thank you for confirming that. And thank you to all of the rest of you for your help and info with the rear slider that incorporates the vent. I will either create something similar, or seek out the gentleman who makes them and see what purchasing his design would entail.
After discussions with all y'all, I am definitely going to put jalousie windows on both sides of my bus, in the sliding door and over the stove area. I think that I am going to buy the jalousie windows in the photos I have linked despite the lack of screens as I cant seem to find another set anywhere else and the asking price is only 119.00 for the set. _________________ 1989 Westfalia Vanogan GL, 2.1 |

David, just to note that in your 1989 you can only mount (1) Jalousie window without extensive modification and having new tempered glass panes made.
only the Drivers side (kitchen) window is sized to accept a Bay jalousie (with filler strip on bottom)
the sliding door is smaller in the 85.5+ vans with the short slider handle and updated latching mechanism. if you have a hammer, saw and fat wallet then anything is possible of course.
if you are already aware of that then please ignore this public service message and continue on. _________________

Just to clarify, you can have resized jalousie windows cut from a sheet of plexiglass at most local hardware stores. Tempered glass does not need to be used but would be great if you had a source for it. _________________ Dave O

Thanks danfromsyr, while I certainly don't mind the use of a hammer, saw, much work, effort, and time, the fat wallet part throws me off. I will have to read a bit more about the modifications necessary. _________________ 1989 Westfalia Vanogan GL, 2.1 |

If you are willing to do the labor I don't think there is much extraneous cost involved. If you have to pay for someone to do it then it will be $$...,.. _________________ Dave O

As for the modifications to the jalousie window to fit the door slider, I would most likely do the work myself, except for the glass cutting,
Sorry to keep going back to the screens of the jalousie windows, but has anyone ever made new screen frames for jalousie windows, or has anyone ever found anyone who makes replacement screen frames for sale ?? _________________ 1989 Westfalia Vanogan GL, 2.1 |

Try taking your jalousie frame down to a hardware store that sells screen door screen/frames and has a guy that rescreens window/doors to help you. They may have what you need. I'm guessing that there was nothing unique about the screen frame, they likely used something standard for the industry. _________________ Dave O
