I know I asked thid before to not too much response, but I would like to know what where the breakdowns on set up. I saw on ISP backyard two early refrigerator style sunroof with no cables. I am assuming '61-'62. Then there is the set up with small plastic wings with cables and last the plastic guides with metal tubes for the cables. Does anyone know how it is broken down as year model?
Update below - Photos!
I always mentioned that there were three different sunroof setups. Though I don't have an early car I just acquired an early set up. Here they are in order.
Late on top, mid 60's in the middle and early '62 on the bottomm.
Inside covers are also different EARLY, MID, LATE
Inner cable guides
EARLY- ivory color, MID- see through plastic, LATE- metal guide
Corners
EARLY- no wing MID- short wing LATE- full wing
Top Covers
Early- 4 screw holes and flat MID- 5 holes and flat LATE-5 holes and outer lip
Lower Center Pieces
LATE w/ small reinforcement EARLY- w/ inner reinforcement LATE- with full reinforcement plate

The two you saw at ISP werebelived to be done privately by sunroof companies. The Golde cable type was offered as early as 62 as a factory option. It was the only VW type. The age of the conversions and the quality of them make the 61 notch and 63 square so cool that you saw at ISP. _________________

Bob, could you post a picture of your sunroof set up? I noticed yours has a plate over the huge drain hole that mine does not. I'll post pics of mine and we'll compare. Anyone else? _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Here is mine: . Mostly original, with N.O.S. replacements only. Which drain hole are you referring to? If the rear, the track runs all the way back, without any other plates, on mine. _________________ Please consider I am Autistic, so I process information differently and still working on social skills. Anyone got a picture of a "refrigerator door"? I have a sneaky feeling it's the same metal Webasto design authorized by Mercedes Benz as a dealer option. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I rebuilt the sunroof assembly today in a roof clip that's going into my Type 34, just to make sure I really had a nice collection of parts. A lot of the stuff in your pictures looks vaguely familiar...except for the plastic. The Type 34 has a bunch more metal in the guides and rails, probably because there's an electric motor involved. Even still, all those plastic sunroof parts would scare the heck out of me. Do you have problems with any of that stuff breaking? Does the Beetle sunroof contain a lot of the same parts and have the same problems? |

That's what us early sunroof owners have to deal with. Late sunroof owners have those cool metal guides. Never having to worry about plastic, their covers are just for show. Ours really hold thew cables in. I would still like to see earlier and later setups. Thanks Adriel for your input! _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

Yep. Just what I thought. Those are the Mercedes roofs- right down to the pop- up deflector. In fact, the pop- up deflector model is almost identical to the one on our 1985 300TDT. So, now we know where to source parts. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

More sunroof mystery. The clean parts belong to my '65 sunroof squareback, the dirty parts came off a '72 sunroof square. Check out the differences same part #'s except the later has an A.
The holes don't align
the later part is a bit shorter.
part #'s

The alphanumeric suffix in a part number often makes all the difference in the world. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

It gets Better,
I pulled my NOS notchback sunroof rail with a 313 part number and it is exactly the same as the late squareback one with a 363 number, they also have differnt suffix letters.
NOS notchback
Off a '72 squareback
same size and position of screw holes. In other words, the same part with different numbers.

More info
Early (blue) VS Late (White) lid differences.
The adjusting nuts are different. The early has 4 holes, the late only has 2.
The early has a ridge on the front and the late is smooth.
Early (left) VS Late(right) plastic covers
Early (plastic) VS Late (metal) sunroof cable guides

thanks for all the pics, the sunroof clip I have is definitely a late one, its got the stainless steel guides. I have a question for you guys, the cables are both rusted completely solid in the metal guides. I want to dunk it into muraitic acid but the side guides are made out of aluminum. I might be able to get a dremel in there and carefully grind up the cable enough to get the aluminum guide seperated. the acid shouldn't hurt the stainless steel but how the heck can i get the cable out of the side guide pieces without jacking them up too badly?
BTW- its been soaking in WD40 for a couple of months now, no joy. _________________ http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y163/chucky1974/ninja.gif
