I read those last night. They are informative, but don't answer my questions. Which are most desirable and what are all the switches for? _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car." |

Like Martin said, the earliest of the earlies (61 to 63), followed by the 64's and 65's (still wide 5), then followed by the rest. The 64's and 65's come as 2 models, "S" and "N", with the "S" being the deluxe model (all the upgrades and full trim), and the "N" being the stripper version (and more rare in the USA). If you're buying one, get the most complete, unmolested car you can afford, as the bits that are missing will be the most costly parts to replace. And that "push button" unit needs to work, or it's upwards of 250 to 300 to replace IF you can find one. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I didn't want to confuse him any more than I already probably did. Besides, it sounded like he wanted a car that would keep it's re-sale value, and that would be the earliest of the earlies. Plus, he's a split window bus guy, so he could understand the earliest of the earlies statement. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Great info guys! So the later IRS ones are not that desirable. I am not so interested in resale value as I am actual purchase value. I know what a bus should cost approximately, but am really out of touch with the Type3 scene. 20,000 for a Type3 seems like a lot of money to me (that's bus pricing) but maybe it is exactly what it should be. The fresh air controls are for -66? Which models came with seatbelts? _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not so fast.
In reality, the latest cars are the best. They worked all the bugs out once and for all right about when they stopped production.
Early swing axle cars with carbs and early body styles are great drivers, but the later ones are even better. If you want to stick with looks AND driveability, a '69 with the early body style plus fuel injection plus IRS is about the best of all worlds (I'd need a sliding roof, auto trans, and A/C), but I most certainly wouldn't turn down a second design car, either. You can drive one of these all day and hardly feel it- unlike a Beetle or Bus. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Well, having owned a 69 Square many years ago, I loved the ease and ride of IRS and I loved the styling. I was not too fond of the dash buttons and I removed the FI entirely and went back to carbs. I was a little bummed about the 4 lug hubs and the limited choice of wheels but that isn't much of an issue nowadays with the adapters and newer wheels. _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Yes, a $20K Type 3 better be crazy nice with tons of accessories or something special like super low mileage and all original.
Or have a pile of money in the glove box. _________________ How to Post Photos

I really like IRS. In fact I swapped to it in my 65 Notch. It wasn't that hard to do, but the way I did the conversion takes away from it being "stock" (even though I used "stock" T-3 parts), which also takes away some of it's value. But, I built the car for cruising, and it sure does swallow up miles and miles of Interstate, and gives that nice comfortable ride while doing it. I"ve driven it for 16.5 hours straight, and felt less fatigued than driving my S-10 pickup for 6 hours.

Now, all you need is some wide 5 t-3 drums, and do a wide 5 disc brake conversion to get the "look" you want. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Well maybe went back is not the correct term, bit basically, I removed the FI and installed carbs. _________________ "When I die, I want to die like my grandfather who died peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming like all the passengers in his car." |
